Search for resonances decaying to three W bosons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

Abstract

A search for resonances decaying into a W boson and a radion, where the radion decays into two W bosons, is presented. The data analyzed correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$ recorded in proton-proton collisions with the CMS detector at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV. One isolated charged lepton is required, together with missing transverse momentum and one or two massive large-radius jets, containing the decay products of either two or one W bosons, respectively. No excess over the background estimation is observed. The results are combined with those from a complementary channel with an all-hadronic final state, described in an accompanying paper. Limits are set on parameters of an extended warped extra-dimensional model. These searches are the first of their kind at the LHC.

Measurement of Born Cross Section for $e^+e^-\to K_S^0\barΞ^+Σ^-+\rm{c.c.}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 3.51-4.95$ GeV

Using $e^+e^-$ collision data collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 44~fb$^{-1}$, we present the first measurement of the Born cross sections for the process $e^+e^-\to K_S^0\barΞ^+Σ^-$ at 56 center-of-mass energies from 3.510 to 4.951~GeV. By fitting the dressed cross sections of $e^+e^-\to K_S^0\barΞ^+Σ^-$ with the assumption of a power-law function plus a charmonium(-like) resonance, i.e. $ψ(3770)$, $ψ(4040)$, $ψ(4160)$, $Y(4230)$, $Y(4360)$, $ψ(4415)$, $Y$(4500), $Y(4660)$, and $Y$(4710), no significant signal of any charmonium(-like) state decaying into the $K_S^0\barΞ^+Σ^-$ is observed. Upper limits on the product of the electronic width and branching fraction at the 90% confidence level are given for each resonance. Combining this result with the previous measurement of the isospin-symmetric process $e^+e^-\to K^{-} \barΞ^{+} Σ^{0} $, the ratio of the Born cross sections, $R=σ^{B}(e^+e^-\to K_S^0\barΞ^+Σ^-)/$$σ^{B}(e^+e^-\to K^-\barΞ^+Σ^0)$, is found to be consistent with unity.

SemiCharmTag: a tool for Semileptonic Charm tagging

A method for selecting and/or rejecting leptons from charm semileptonic decays based on the tagging of the secondary vertex using a hadron track is introduced. The method is developed for dimuon Drell-Yan measurements in LHCb using full simulations in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13.6$ TeV. We focus on the invariant mass range between 2.9 and 5 GeV/$c^2$ with single muon transverse momentum larger than 1 GeV/$c$. A novel strategy is detailed for background rejection, achieving an improvement of the signal over background of a factor $\sim 4$ at an efficiency of 81% while maintaining the Drell-Yan kinematic distributions largely unbiased except at the acceptance edges. Moreover, a second approach is presented for the construction of unbiased background-pure samples of single muons from charm decays, achieving a charm efficiency of 21.4% at a Drell-Yan efficiency of 1.1%.

Search for low-mass resonances decaying to $ττ$ in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV

An inclusive search is presented for spin-zero bosons decaying to $ττ$ in a previously unexplored mass range between 20 and 60 GeV using proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 61.9 fb$^{-1}$ recorded by CMS in 2022$-$2023. The search is performed using a high-rate trigger stream in combination with a novel low-momentum hadronic tau reconstruction algorithm. No significant excess above the standard model background is observed. Upper limits on the product of the spin-zero resonance production cross section and branching fraction to $ττ$ are set at 95% confidence level between 40 and 400 pb.
