Hybrid 3D Beamforming Relying on Sensor-Based Training and Channel Estimation for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Aided TeraHertz MIMO systems

Abstract

Terahertz (THz) systems have the benefit of high bandwidth and hence are capable of supporting ultra-high data rates, albeit at the cost of high pathloss. Hence they tend to harness high-gain beamforming. Therefore a novel hybrid 3D beamformer relying on sophisticated sensor-based beam training and channel estimation is proposed for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) aided THz MIMO systems. A so-called array-of-subarray based THz BS architecture is adopted and the corresponding sub-RIS structure is proposed. The BS, RIS and receiver antenna arrays of the users are all uniform planar arrays (UPAs). The Ultra-wideband (UWB) sensors are integrated into the RIS and the user location information obtained by the UWB sensors is exploited for channel estimation and beamforming. Furthermore, the novel concept of a Precise Beamforming Algorithm (PBA) is proposed, which further improves the beam-forming accuracy by circumventing the performance limitations imposed by positioning errors. Moreover, the conditions of maintaining the orthogonality of the RIS-aided THz channel are derived in support of spatial multiplexing. The closed-form expressions of the near-field and far-field path-loss are also derived. Our simulation results show that the proposed scheme accurately estimates the RIS-aided THz channel and the spectral efficiency is much improved, despite its low complexity. This makes our solution eminently suitable for delay-sensitive applications.

Wireless Context Engineering for Efficient Mobile Agentic AI and Edge General Intelligence

Future wireless networks demand increasingly powerful intelligence to support sensing, communication, and autonomous decision-making. While scaling laws suggest improving performance by enlarging model capacity, practical edge deployments are fundamentally constrained by latency, energy, and memory, making unlimited model scaling infeasible. This creates a critical need to maximize the utility of limited inference-time inputs by filtering redundant observations and focusing on high-impact data. In large language models and generative artificial intelligence (AI), context engineering has emerged as a key paradigm to guide inference by selectively structuring and injecting task-relevant information. Inspired by this success, we extend context engineering to wireless systems, providing a systematic way to enhance edge AI performance without increasing model complexity. In dynamic environments, for example, beam prediction can benefit from augmenting instantaneous channel measurements with contextual cues such as user mobility trends or environment-aware propagation priors. We formally introduce wireless context engineering and propose a Wireless Context Communication Framework (WCCF) to adaptively orchestrate wireless context under inference-time constraints. This work provides researchers with a foundational perspective and practical design dimensions to manage the wireless context of wireless edge intelligence. An ISAC-enabled beam prediction case study illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed paradigm under constrained sensing budgets.

Antenna Coding and Digital Precoding for Limited Feedback MIMO Systems Using Pixel Antennas

Pixel antennas enable antenna coding, a technique that can provide more degrees of freedom in wave manipulation, to enhance wireless communications. However, acquiring full channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter incurs prohibitive overhead due to the unique hardware constraints from pixel antennas. This paper thus proposes a limited feedback multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system using pixel antennas, where the antenna coder and digital precoder are designed based on pre-defined codebooks and efficient index feedbacks. We first derive the optimal digital precoder under practical power constraints that provides insights on simplifying the joint codebook construction for antenna coder and digital precoder. We then develop a low-complexity offline codebook construction algorithm that enables subsequent codebook designs for the antenna coder and digital precoder. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme significantly outperforms unconstrained MIMO systems using conventional antennas with fixed configurations.

Factor-Wise Parameter Learning in Score-Based VAMP

Score-based vector approximate message passing (SC-VAMP) builds state-evolution-predictable inference from modular soft-input soft-output (SISO) factors, but every factor must be handed correct parameters: a wrong sparsity rate, signal variance, or noise level distorts the tilted distributions and Onsager terms, raises the fixed-point mean-squared error (MSE), and invalidates matched state-evolution (SE) prediction. We let each factor learn its own parameters instead. An expectation-maximization (EM) M-step taken under the module's tilted distribution is attached to every parameterized factor and costs O(N) per module, because that distribution and its moments are precisely what the SISO rule already computes on the way to the score; the score-based interface and the Onsager correction are left untouched. Under standard large-system SE assumptions and identifiability conditions, the true parameters and the matched SE variance form a fixed point of the recursion, at which the estimate attains the replica minimum MSE (MMSE); prior factors and likelihood/linear-MMSE (LMMSE) factors are treated separately, the latter under the Gaussian cavity induced by the VAMP transformed-error model. On linear and one-bit Bernoulli-Gaussian compressed sensing, the updates recover near-oracle accuracy from strongly mismatched initializations.
