On Turing-Turing bifurcation of partial functional differential equations and its induced superposition patterns

Abstract

When two Turing modes interact, i.e., Turing-Turing bifurcation occurs, superposition patterns revealing complex dynamical phenomena appear. In this paper, superposition patterns resulting from Turing-Turing bifurcation are investigated in theory. Firstly, the third-order normal form locally topologically equivalent to original partial functional differential equations (PFDEs) is derived. When selecting 1D domain and Neumann boundary conditions, three normal forms describing different spatial patterns are deduced from original third-order normal form. Also, formulas for computing coefficients of these normal forms are given, which are expressed in explicit form of original system parameters. With the aid of three normal forms, spatial patterns of a diffusive predator-prey system with Crowley-Martin functional response near Turing-Turing singularity are investigated. For one set of parameters, diffusive system supports the coexistence of four stable steady states with different single characteristic wavelengths, which demonstrates our previous conjecture. For another set of parameters, superposition patterns, tri-stable patterns that a pair of stable superposition steady states coexists with the stable coexistence equilibrium or another stable steady state, as well as quad-stable patterns that a pair of stable superposition steady states and another pair of stable steady states coexist, arise. Finally, numerical simulations are shown to support theory analysis.

Dynamics on Bi-Lagrangian Structures and Cherry maps

We consider a bi-Lagrangian structure $(ω,\mathcal{F}_1,\mathcal{F}_2)$ on a manifold $M$; that is, $(M,ω,\mathcal{F}_1,\mathcal{F}_2)$ is a bi-Lagrangian manifold. We prolong bi-Lagrangian structures on $M$ and lift a given dynamics to its tangent and cotangent bundles in several ways. In some cases, we show that the lifted structures are affine. In the case of the two-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^2$, we prove that an extension of the same dynamics to pairs of so-called Cherry vector fields induces a conjugation action on a subset of Cherry maps, namely circle maps with a flat interval. Furthermore, we define linear connections for certain Cherry maps using bi-Lagrangian data. Finally, we show that maps generated by a bi-Lagrangian structure belong a priori to different Hölder homeomorphism classes.

Visiting time statistics

Many mixing dynamical systems $(X,T,μ)$ are known to satisfy the hitting time statistics result \[ \lim_{r \to 0} μ\{\, x : τ_{B(y,r)} (x) > t/μ(B(y,r))\,\} = e^{-t}, \] for $μ$-almost every $y$, where $τ_{B(y,r)} (x)$ is the first hitting time of $x$ to the ball $B(y,r)$. Taking a different point of view, we fix $x$ and consider $τ_{B(y,r)} (x)$ as a function of $y$. We call this the visiting time of $y$ from $x$, i.e. the time it takes for $y$ to get a visit from $x$ within a neighbourhood of radius $r$. We prove that \[ \lim_{r \to 0} μ\{\, y : τ_{B(y,r)} (x) > t/μ(B(y,r)) \,\} = e^{-t}, \] for $μ$-almost every $x$. As a byproduct we obtain a new method of proof for hitting time statistics.

Very sparse return sets in arithmetic dynamics

When studying the dynamical Mordell-Lang conjecture by using the $p$-adic method, experts have found that return sets of the $p$-adic version of the DML problem can be very sparse. In this article, we investigate the similar phenomenon for a complex analytic version of the DML problem and the DML problem for backward orbits.
