Graphing, homotopy groups of spheres, and spaces of long links and knots

Abstract

We study homotopy groups of spaces of long links in Euclidean space of codimension at least three. With multiple components, they admit split injections from homotopy groups of spheres. We show that, up to knotting, these account for all the homotopy groups in a range which depends on the dimensions of the source manifolds and target manifold and which roughly generalizes the triple-point-free range for isotopy classes. Just beyond this range, joining components sends both a parametrized long Borromean rings class and a Hopf fibration to a generator of the first nontrivial homotopy group of the space of long knots. For spaces of equidimensional long links of most source dimensions, we describe generators for the homotopy group in this degree in terms of these Borromean rings and homotopy groups of spheres. A key ingredient in most of our results is a graphing map which increases source and target dimensions by one.

Topological line arrangements and their topological invariants

A topological line arrangement is an arrangement of embedded spheres in the complex projective plane that topologically generalizes a complex line arrangement. In this paper, we establish foundational results on the topology of the complement of topological line arrangements. First, we prove that the cohomology ring of the complement is isomorphic to the Orlik-Solomon algebra, as for classical complex line arrangements. We then study the homotopy type of the complement. We prove that the complement of a symplectic line arrangement has the homotopy type of a minimal CW complex. In contrast, every combinatorial type realizable by a topological line arrangement admits a realization with a non-minimal complement. Moreover, every such combinatorial type admits infinitely many realizations whose complements are pairwise non-homotopy equivalent.

Detecting fibered strongly quasi-positive links

We prove that an $n$-component fibered link $L$ in $S^3$ is strongly quasi-positive if and only if $τ(L)=g_3(L)+n-1$, where $g_3(L)$ denotes the Seifert genus and $τ$ is the Ozsváth-Szabó concordance invariant. We also provide a table which contains a list of some fibered prime links with at most 9 crossings; and we explicitly determine the ones that are strongly quasi-positive and their maximal self-linking number.

About torsion in the cokernels of the Johnson homomorphisms

The so-called Johnson homomorphisms $(τ_k)_{k \geq 1}$ embed the graded space associated to the Johnson filtration of a surface with one boundary component into the Lie ring of positive symplectic derivations $D(H)$. In this paper, we show the existence of torsion in the cokernels of the Johnson homomorphisms, for all even degrees, provided the genus is big enough. The Satoh trace $\operatorname{Tr}$ is one of the known obstructions to be in the image of $τ$. For each degree, we define a map on $\operatorname{Ker}(\operatorname{Tr}) \cap D(H)$ whose image is 2-torsion, and which vanishes on the image of $τ$. We also give a formula to compute these maps.
