Numerical Ergodicity and Uniform Estimate of Monotone SPDEs Driven by Multiplicative Noise

Abstract

We analyze the long-time behavior of numerical schemes for a class of monotone stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) driven by multiplicative noise. By deriving several time-independent a priori estimates for the numerical solutions, combined with the ergodic theory of Markov processes, we establish the exponential ergodicity of these schemes with a unique invariant measure, respectively. Applying these results to the stochastic Allen--Cahn equation indicates that these schemes always have at least one invariant measure, respectively, and converge strongly to the exact solution with sharp time-independent rates. We also show that these numerical invariant measures are exponentially ergodic and thus give an affirmative answer to a question proposed in (J. Cui, J. Hong, and L. Sun, Stochastic Process. Appl. (2021): 55--93), provided that the interface thickness is not too small.

$L^p$-Convergence Rate of Backward Euler Schemes for Monotone SDEs

We give a unified method to derive the strong convergence rate of the backward Euler scheme for monotone SDEs in $L^p(Ω)$-norm, with general $p \ge 4$. The results are applied to the backward Euler scheme of SODEs with polynomial growth coefficients. We also generalize the argument to the Galerkin-based backward Euler scheme of SPDEs with polynomial growth coefficients driven by multiplicative trace-class noise.

Overcoming the spatial order barrier for nonlinear SPDEs with additive space-time white noise

We introduce a fully discrete numerical scheme for semilinear SPDEs with additive space-time white noise that overcomes the previous order barrier for the spatial convergence rate. The scheme achieves a strong convergence rate of $M^{-1+ε}$ in time and $N^{-3/2+ε}$ in space for any $ε>0$, where $M^{-1}$ and $N^{-1}$ are the temporal, respectively the spatial, meshsizes. This substantially improves the standard spatial error bounds of order $N^{-1/2}$ in the literature.

Two Adjoint Perspectives on Fokker-Planck Optimization: A Microscopic-Macroscopic Correspondence

The Fokker-Planck equation admits both a macroscopic Eulerian description through probability densities and a microscopic Lagrangian description through stochastic trajectories. Consequently, optimization problems constrained by the Fokker-Planck equation can be formulated from either perspective. Surprisingly, the corresponding adjoint equations appear to be fundamentally different: the macroscopic adjoint is governed by the backward Kolmogorov equation, whereas the microscopic adjoint evolves pathwise along stochastic trajectories. In this note, we reconcile these two formulations by establishing their correspondence in the continuum setting. We further show that, although their discrete gradients no longer coincide after discretization, both provide consistent numerical approximations of the continuum gradient. Explicit convergence rates are established for both discretization strategies.
