On the 4d/3d/2d view of the SCFT/VOA correspondence

Abstract

We start with the SCFT/VOA correspondence formulated in the Omega-background approach, and connect it to the boundary VOA in 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ theories and chiral algebras of 2d $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ theories. This is done using the dimensional reduction of the 4d theory on the topologically twisted and Omega-deformed cigar, performed in two steps. This paves the way for many more interesting questions, and we offer quite a few. We also use this approach to explain some older observations on the TQFTs produced from the generalized Argyres-Douglas (AD) theories reduced on the circle with a discrete twist. In particular, we argue that many AD theories with trivial Higgs branch, upon reduction on $S^1$ with the $\mathbb{Z}_N$ twist (where $\mathbb{Z}_N$ is a global symmetry of the given AD theory), result in the rank-0 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ SCFTs, which have been a subject of recent studies. A generic AD theory, by the same logic, leads to a 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ SCFT with zero-dimensional Coulomb branch (and suggests that there are a lot of them). Our construction therefore puts various empirical observations on the firm ground, such as, among other things, the match between the 4d VOA and the boundary VOA for some 3d rank-0 SCFTs previously observed in the literature. We end with an extensive list of promising open problems.

Quantum Horizon Tadpole and Emergence of a de Sitter Interior

In a recent paper \cite{Chu:2026dhx}, the quantum stability of the fuzzy sphere was established at large but finite $N$, where a tadpole was also identified for the scaling fluctuation mode of the matrix geometry. Here we show that this tadpole generates a positive area-conjugate microscopic response, which in isolation energetically favors contraction of the fuzzy sphere. However, when the horizon is coupled to gravity, the tadpole requires the bulk geometry to adjust according to the junction condition of general relativity. Taking the exterior geometry to be Schwarzschild, we show that the junction condition requires a positive interior cosmological constant. Imposing a static, spherically symmetric, regular vacuum interior then selects pure de Sitter space. The matching further determines a soldering relation between the interior de Sitter time and the exterior Schwarzschild time, with a relative lapse growing as $C = O(N)$. We also propose a matrix realization of the de Sitter interior in which fuzzy-sphere representation sizes determine the angular geometry while condensates of off-diagonal link fields determine the emergent radial metric. This provides a concrete consistency test for spacetime emergence from the matrix degrees of freedom. Potential cosmological implications are discussed.

The Fuzzy-Sphere as a Black Hole in the IKKT Matrix Model: An Assessment

Black-hole thermodynamics has been reproduced with remarkable success from the BFSS matrix model, but the corresponding test in the closely related IKKT matrix model has awaited its recently proposed finite-temperature formulation, within which we investigate this correspondence. Introducing a cubic Myers term, we compute the complete one-loop thermodynamics -- free energy, internal energy, entropy, and heat capacity -- of a fuzzy $S^2$ background, and compare against the D0 and D2 black holes as the closest available reference points, since no gravitational dual is known for this specific background. At fixed Myers coupling, the leading entropy exhibits an $O(N^3)$ scaling rather than the $O(N^2)$ behavior characteristic of conventional black holes. Holding the physical radius fixed instead yields a genuine $O(N^2)$ scaling, showing that the power of $N$ depends on the large-$N$ prescription and is therefore not by itself an unambiguous test of a black-hole interpretation. We further find no intrinsic Hawking temperature -- only a characteristic scale -- and a heat capacity that is negative at low temperature but positive at high temperature. The absence of an intrinsic Hawking temperature, tied to the missing gravitational dual rather than to the choice of large-$N$ prescription, persists in either scaling limit. Rather than establishing a black-hole interpretation of the finite-temperature IKKT matrix model, these results provide a quantitative benchmark against which future analytical, numerical, and holographic investigations can be tested.

Merons beyond Yang-Mills theory

Within the wide variety of topological solitons supported by Yang--Mills theory, merons occupy a particularly distinguished role. Despite their simplicity, they represent genuinely non-Abelian configurations that can be regarded as the fundamental building blocks of instantons, and they provide a qualitatively accurate picture of confinement. In this work, we show that such configurations are, in fact, supported by a broad class of non-Abelian gauge theories beyond Yang--Mills, provided that suitable physical conditions are satisfied. Taking into account their gravitational backreaction, we further demonstrate that both black holes and Euclidean wormholes sourced by merons admit natural extensions within this generalized framework, which regularizes the singular behavior they exhibit in constant--curvature backgrounds. As a byproduct, we construct a regular black hole solution supported by genuinely non-Abelian gauge fields, based on a non-Abelian generalization of the Ayón--Beato--García nonlinear electrodynamics. As a consequence, physical effects intrinsic to merons are likewise expected to be inherited by these classes of theories beyond the Yang-Mills framework. A notable example is the spin from isospin effect, whereby bosonic excitations charged under the gauge group can effectively behave as fermionic degrees of freedom.
