$k$ Summands of Syzygies over Rings of Positive Burch Index Via Canonical Resolutions

Abstract

In recent work, Dao and Eisenbud define the notion of a Burch index, expanding the notion of Burch rings of Dao, Kobayashi, and Takahashi, and show that for any module over a ring of Burch index at least 2, its $n$th syzygy contains direct summands of the residue field for $n=4$ or $5$ and all $n\geq 7$. We investigate how this behavior is explained by the bar resolution formed from appropriate differential graded (dg) resolutions, yielding a new proof that includes all $n\geq 5$, which is sharp. When the module is Golod, we use instead the bar resolution formed from $A_\infty$ resolutions to identify such $k$ summands explicitly for all $n\geq 4$ and show that the number of these grows exponentially as the homological degree increases.

On $\mathbb{A}^1$-contractibility of certain simple birational extensions of affine spaces

Over a field of characteristic zero, upto isomorphism of varieties, affine spaces are the only smooth $\mathbb{A}^1$-contractible affine varieties in dimensions $\leqslant 2$. However, in dimensions $\geqslant 3$, examples of smooth $\mathbb{A}^1$-contractible affine varieties, not isomorphic to affine spaces are constructed by Dubouloz, Fasel [2018] and Dubouloz, Ghosh [2026]. In this paper, we consider a generalized class of smooth affine varieties containing the examples of $\mathbb{A}^1$-contractible varieties by Dubouloz, Fasel [2018] and Dubouloz, Ghosh [2026], given as $$ a(x_m)b(x_1,\ldots,x_{m-1})y+f(z,t)+x_m=0, $$ and investigate when such a variety is actually isomorphic to an affine space. We establish that, for a large subfamilies of these varieties to be affine spaces, it is necessary and sufficient that the embedding of the corresponding hyperplane in $\mathbb{A}^{m+3}$ must be rectifiable, in the sense that, there exists an automorphism of the ambient space that takes it to a coordinate hyperplane. Thus our result naturally connects $\mathbb A^1$-contractibility of these varieties with the classical embedding problem for affine spaces in codimension one, and provide new evidences towards the conjecture of Abhyankar and Sathaye. A key ingredient in our approach is to study singular $\mathbb A^1$-contractible affine curves over perfect fields. We describe the possible singularities of such curves and obtain a generalization of the classical result of Lin-Zaidenberg for topologically contractible affine plane curves. We further construct new examples of $\mathbb{A}^1$-contractible affine varieties in every dimension $\geqslant 4$, in the sense that they are not isomorphic to the existing examples.

On the system of length sets of power monoids

The set $\mathcal{P}_{{\rm fin},0}(\mathbb{N}_0)$ of all finite subsets of $\mathbb{N}_0$ containing the zero element is a monoid with set addition as operation. If a set $A\in\mathcal{P}_{{\rm fin},0}(\mathbb{N}_0)$ can be written in the form $A=\sum_{i=1}^{\ell} A_i$ with $\ell\in\mathbb{N}_0$ and indecomposable elements $(A_i)_{i=1}^{\ell}$ of $\mathcal{P}_{{\rm fin},0}(\mathbb{N}_0)$, then $\ell$ is a factorization length of $A$ and $\mathsf{L}(A)\subseteq\mathbb{N}_0$ denotes the set of all possible factorization lengths of $A$. We show that for each rational number $q\geq 1$, there is some $A\in\mathcal{P}_{{\rm fin},0}(\mathbb{N}_0)$ such that $q=\frac{\max(\mathsf{L}(A))}{\min(\mathsf{L}(A))}$. This supports a conjecture of Fan and Tringali.

Quasi-projective dimension for complexes via filtrations

We extend quasi-projective dimension and quasi-projective length from finitely generated modules to homologically finite complexes by using finite filtrations in the derived category. Our definitions recover the original invariants of Gheibi--Jorgensen--Takahashi for modules and behave well under exact functors, which simplifies the proofs of several results. We establish the Auslander--Buchsbaum formula, the derived depth and width formulas, and the dependency formula for complexes of finite quasi-projective dimension. Extending a result of Gheibi--Jorgensen--Takahashi, we show that every homologically finite complex has finite quasi-projective dimension over a suitable complete intersection ring. We also prove a new intersection theorem and a descent theorem for Serre's conditions. Finally, we obtain vanishing results for Tor, Ext, and Tate (co)homology, and deduce symmetry of eventual Ext vanishing over Gorenstein local rings.
