Travelling Waves and Exponential Nonlinearities in the Zeldovich-Frank-Kamenetskii Equation

Abstract

We prove the existence of a family of travelling wave solutions in a variant of the $\textit{Zeldovich-Frank-Kamenetskii (ZFK) equation}$, a reaction-diffusion equation which models the propagation of planar laminar premixed flames in combustion theory. Our results are valid in an asymptotic regime which corresponds to a reaction with high activation energy, and provide a rigorous and geometrically informative counterpart to formal asymptotic results that have been obtained for similar problems using $\textit{high activation energy asymptotics}$. We also go beyond the existing results by (i) proving smoothness of the minimum wave speed function $\overline c(ε)$, where $0< ε\ll 1$ is the small parameter, and (ii) providing an asymptotic series for a flat slow manifold which plays a role in the construction of travelling wave solutions for non-minimal wave speeds $c > \overline c(ε)$. The analysis is complicated by the presence of an exponential nonlinearity which leads to two different scaling regimes as $ε\to 0$, which we refer to herein as the $\textit{convective-diffusive}$ and $\textit{diffusive-reactive}$ zones. The main idea of the proof is to use the geometric blow-up method to identify and characterise a $(c,ε)$-family of heteroclinic orbits which traverse both of these regimes, and correspond to travelling waves in the original ZFK equation. More generally, our analysis contributes to a growing number of studies which demonstrate the utility of geometric blow-up approaches to the study dynamical systems with singular exponential nonlinearities.

Effective equidistribution of orbits under semisimple groups on congruence quotients

We prove an effective equidistribution result for periodic orbits of semisimple groups on congruence quotients of an ambient semisimple group. This extends a previous work of Einsiedler, Margulis and Venkatesh. The main new feature is that we allow for periodic orbits of semisimple groups with nontrivial centralizer in the ambient group. Our proof uses crucially an effective closing lemma from work of the author with Lindenstrauss, Margulis,Mohammadi, and Shah.

Generalized entropy of measure-induced maps

A classical result by E. Glasner and B. Weiss states that the topological entropy of a map $f$ is zero if and only if the topological entropy of its measure-induced map $f_*$ is zero, where $f_*$ is defined as the push-forward of a measure. In this work, we use generalized entropy to distinguish the complexity of these maps and prove that the measure-induced map is much more complex than the original map. Moreover, we introduce the generalized mean dimension, an invariant that is useful for distinguishing dynamical systems with zero mean dimension, including those with the small-boundary property, and we show a relationship between this new invariant and generalized entropy.

The endpoint problem for $\varepsilon$-hypercyclicity

For a fixed $0<\varepsilon<1$, F. Bayart asked in 2024 whether there exists an operator $T$ such that, for every $0<δ<1$, $T$ is $δ$-hypercyclic if and only if $δ\in[\varepsilon,1)$. We answer this question affirmatively by constructing a weighted backward shift on $\ell_2(\mathbb N_0,\ell_2(\mathbb N_0))$ with this property.
