Abstract

By nonstandard analysis, a very short and elementary proof of the Spectral Theorem for unbounded self-adjoint operators is given.

Improved sup-norm bounds for locally symmetric spaces

Let $X=G/K$ be a symmetric space of noncompact type, of dimension $n$ and rank $r$, and let $Y=Γ\backslash X$. Sarnak's local bound for an $L^2$-normalized spherical joint eigenfunction with regular tempered parameter of size $T$ is $\|ϕ\|_\infty\ll T^{(n-r)/2}$. We prove $o(T^{(n-r)/2})$ locally uniformly on every quotient. On finite-volume real hyperbolic manifolds this is uniform in the expanding cusp range $y\leq T^β$, $β<1/2$. If the injectivity radius is bounded below, we prove the global estimate $T^{(n-r)/2}(\log T)^{-r/2}$. The proof makes use of a novel kernel argument and a uniform bound on the spherical function.

Weighted heat traces of the Dirichlet Laplacian on Lipschitz domains

We prove an asymptotic expansion of a weighted heat trace of the Dirichlet Laplacian on a bounded Lipschitz domain. The weight is given by a power of the distance to the boundary times a bounded function that is continuous near the boundary. Depending on the exponent of the weight, we obtain one-term or two-term asymptotics. We present two applications, namely a version of one-term asymptotics of weighted Riesz means for arbitrary orders, as well as convergence results for a family of measures that describes localization of Laplace eigenfunctions.

Irreducibility of the Bloch variety for periodic Schrödinger operators in arbitrary dimension

Let $d\ge1$ and $V\in C(\mathbb{T}^d;\mathbb{C})$. We prove that the Bloch variety of $-Δ+V$ is irreducible modulo periodicity. The proof combines holomorphic continuation of spectral band functions with integer translations of quasimomentum. Using analytic geometry and perturbation estimates along imaginary rays, we show that, after suitable integer translations, all irreducible components contain the same holomorphic spectral branch.
