Singly poled thin film lithium niobate waveguide as a tunable source of photon pairs across telecom band

Abstract

Spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC), especially in non-linear waveguides, serves as an important process to generate quantum states of light with desired properties. In this work, we report on a design of a strongly dispersive, singly poled thin film lithium niobate (TFLN) waveguide geometry which acts as a convertible source of photon pairs across telecom band with tunable spectral properties. Through our simulations, we demonstrate that by using this optimized waveguide geometry, two completely different yet desirable type II phase-matched SPDC processes are enabled using a single poling period. One process generates spectrally correlated non-degenerate photon pairs with one photon at 1310 nm (telecom O band) and the other at 1550 nm (telecom C band). The second SPDC process results in spectrally uncorrelated photon pairs in telecom C band at 1533 nm and 1567 nm respectively. We attribute this versatility of TFLN waveguide to its strong dispersion properties and make a comparative study with the existing weakly dispersive waveguide platforms. We believe that such a versatile source of photon pairs will serve as an important ingredient in various quantum optical tasks which require photons at different telecom bands and desired spectral properties.

A Review of ERA5 Equatorial Wind Data and Impact on a Space Elevator

This paper uses the ERA5 weather dataset to assess the impact of the wind on an equatorial space elevator. An analytical formulation establishes that the effect of wind on tether inclination and payload capacity can be captured by a single scalar: RMS wind velocity, averaged over air pressure. This formulation clarifies what constitutes excessive wind for a particular elevator and provides a direct link between wind data and elevator design parameters. Analysis of equatorial ERA5 data shows that equatorial wind loading varies strongly with geography with lower values over continents and higher values over oceans, with the majority contribution coming from the lowest 20 km of atmosphere. The data indicate that realistic equatorial winds pose a significant constraint on thin-ribbon elevator designs if align to face the wind. Combining wind and lightning statistics highlights several promising equatorial regions for anchor sites. Finally, the implications of wind loading for elevator design are examined, and several mitigation strategies are discussed to improve survivability and operational payload capacity under realistic wind conditions.

Value-level data provenance in an electronic laboratory notebook used by humans and language-model agents: An experience report

A published laboratory number can be verified only when its raw file and extraction method are known. This paper presents the value-level provenance architecture of APS ELN, an electronic laboratory notebook used by both researchers and language-model agents. The architecture was motivated by a production audit in a materials laboratory covering projects performed over almost 5 years. Tracing eight baseline studies from sample to stored value showed that the initial ELN structure preserved the link from sample to raw file. Still, the link from raw file to stored value was lost, mainly due to human factors: manual entries carried no file reference or extractor version. To close this gap, the database design and workflow were reworked so that every stored value records its source file, the data file reader/viewer (DFR) plugin and version, any interactive analysis selection, or the server-side formula for derived quantities. An automated drift check re-runs each DFR on the stored files. In two end-to-end validation studies recorded by agents in X-ray reflectivity and tribology, all stored values retained verifiable provenance with zero drift. A comparison with five other platforms shows that none binds individual stored numbers to both their source files and extractor versions.

A Multimodal Engineering GraphRAG Framework for Post-Wind-Event Building Assessment and Recovery Inference

Post-event building assessment requires linking observed physical damage to its consequences for safety, habitability, functionality, and recovery. Yet post-disaster evidence is often heterogeneous, incomplete, and distributed across images and reconnaissance reports, while recovery models typically require structured engineering inputs. This study develops a multimodal engineering Graph Retrieval-Augmented Generation (GraphRAG) framework that connects post-wind-event damage evidence to physical consequences, building-condition states, recovery actions, and downtime. Image- and text-based evidence is transformed into a provenance-preserving, component-level representation distinguishing confirmed damage, explicit negative evidence, unresolved conditions, and temporary measures. Graph-aligned retrieval combines comparable building scenarios with explicit engineering relationships, while compatibility, contradiction, evidence-precedence, and abstention mechanisms constrain inference under partial observability. Recovery actions are derived from supported damage-consequence relationships, and downtime uncertainty is propagated through an action-dependency network using Monte Carlo simulation. The framework is demonstrated for tornado-affected low-rise residential buildings using reconnaissance and image-based evidence. Comparisons with BaselineRAG and Structured Baseline RAG show improved agreement for key building-condition and recovery outcomes, together with traceable engineering reasoning and preserved evidence provenance. Ablation analyses demonstrate the contributions of engineering context, evidence safeguards, and graph-path traversal. The results support transparent, recovery-oriented assessment from incomplete multimodal post-event evidence.
