From semi-total to equitable total colorings, and their induced partitions into perfect and total perfect codes

Abstract

Independently posed by Behzad and Vizing, the Total Coloring Conjecture asserts that the total chromatic number of a connected simple graph $G$ is either $Δ(G)+1$ or $Δ(G)+2$, where $Δ(G)$ is the largest degree of a vertex of $G$. Deciding whether a cubic graph $G$ has total chromatic number $Δ(G)+1$, even for bipartite cubic graphs, is NP-hard. The problem persists even for equitable total colorings. Williams and Holroyd gave a condition for total colorings via the introduction of semi-total colorings. In the present work, focus is set on obtaining, by means of a variation of Kempe's 1879 graph-coloring algorithm, equitable total colorings out of semi-total colorings of: symmetric cubic graphs, cage graphs and expansions of cubic graphs. It is noted that total colorings of the 3-cube and subsequent polygon prisms exist having perfect codes as their vertex color classes, as well as semi-total colorings of Möbius ladders having total perfect codes as their vertex color classes, only one of which, in $K_{3,3}$, being equitable; in addition, a partition into two perfect-codes and one total-perfect code is given by the vertex color classes of the 90-vertex Foster graph. On the other hand, a semi-total coloring of the 42-vertex $(5,6)$-cage yields its decomposition into three copies of the Heawood graph via its edges of same color endvertices and seven remaining 6-cycles.

Rooted Spider Embeddings and the Erd\H os-Sós Conjecture

Under a local density condition, we prove that every $k$-edge spider embeds at any prescribed center of degree at least $k$, unless all legs are even and the host graph has one of two specified structures. These structures contain complete bipartite subgraphs with prescribed neighborhoods. The proof uses path rerouting and three exchange lemmas that describe equality in neighborhood estimates. As a consequence, we recover the Erd\H os-Sós bound for all spiders.

Generalized Goulden-Yong duals and signed minimal factorizations

In this paper, we give two combinatorial ways to study signed exceptional sequences. First, we show the equivalence between one-way reflections and relatively projective representations. Secondly, we construct generalized Goulden-Yong duals using reverse Garside element actions and folded chord diagrams. We then give two applications of the generalized Goulden-Yong duals: constructing generalized Prüfer codes and counting signed factorizations using the matrix-tree theorem.

Explicit expressions for iterates of power series

We present several formulas for both the discrete and fractional iterates of an invertible power series $f$, using a new unifying approach based on umbral calculus. Known formulas are extended, and their proofs simplified, while new expressions are introduced. In particular, by employing $q$-calculus identities, we eliminate the requirement for $f'(0)$ to equal $1$ and the resulting general expressions for the iterative logarithm are obtained as well.
