Functions of bounded variation and Lipschitz algebras in metric measure spaces

Abstract

Given a unital algebra $\mathscr A$ of locally Lipschitz functions defined over a metric measure space $({\mathrm X},{\mathsf d},\mathfrak m)$, we study two associated notions of function of bounded variation and their relations: the space ${\mathrm BV}_{\mathrm H}({\mathrm X};\mathscr A)$, obtained by approximating in energy with elements of $\mathscr A$, and the space ${\mathrm BV}_{\mathrm W}({\mathrm X};\mathscr A)$, defined through an integration-by-parts formula that involves derivations acting in duality with $\mathscr A$. Our main result provides a sufficient condition on the algebra $\mathscr A$ under which ${\mathrm BV}_{\mathrm H}({\mathrm X};\mathscr A)$ coincides with the standard metric BV space ${\mathrm BV}_{\mathrm H}({\mathrm X})$, which corresponds to taking as $\mathscr A$ the collection of all locally Lipschitz functions. Our result applies to several cases of interest, for example to Euclidean spaces and Riemannian manifolds equipped with the algebra of smooth functions, or to Banach and Wasserstein spaces equipped with the algebra of cylinder functions. Analogous results for metric Sobolev spaces ${\mathrm H}^{1,p}$ of exponent $p\in(1,\infty)$ were previously obtained by several different authors.

Vector-valued partial sums on unbounded Vilenkin systems

Let \(\Gm=\prod_{k\ge0}\mathbb Z_{m_k}\) be a Vilenkin group that is not necessarily bounded, i.e., \(\sup_k m_k=\infty\). We prove that, for every UMD Banach space \(X\) and every \(1<p<\infty\), the Vilenkin partial-sum operators are uniformly bounded on \(L^p(\Gm;X)\), with a bound depending only on \(p\) and the UMD constant of \(X\), and not on \(\mathbf m\). This resolves an open problem arising from the work of Clément et al.~\cite{ClementDePagterSukochevWitvliet2000} and later recorded explicitly in the book of Hytönen et al.~\cite[p.~362]{HNVWI}. The proof reduces the partial-sum estimate, via a Paley conjugation identity and a tangent-sequence decoupling argument, to a decoupling inequality for Fourier projections on finite cyclic groups, which appears to be new. The same approach also yields \(\mathcal R\)-boundedness for the family of partial-sum operators associated with the finer block decomposition, thereby resolving another related problem communicated to us by Fedor Sukochev.

Small exponent Schatten class Toeplitz operators on convex domains of finite type

In this paper, we study the characterizations of Schatten \(p\)-class Toeplitz operators on smoothly bounded convex domains of finite type in \(\C^n\). On one hand, by using discrete Kobayashi lattice, we characterize the Schatten \(p\)-class Toeplitz operators by employing a probabilistic selection method for \(0 \frac{n}{n+1}\). On the other hand, as an application, the criterion gives a geometric characterization for Schatten \(p\)-class weighted composition operators for \(0 \frac{2n}{n+1}\). Our main results give an answer to the question that find a geometric or analytic characterization of the Schatten \(p\)-class weighted composition operators whenever \(0<p<2\) raised by Xiao-Yang-Yuan \cite{Xiao2026}.
