Simple-stable and Bowditch representations of the four-punctured sphere group in Gromov-hyperbolic spaces

Abstract

In this paper, we study representations from the four-punctured sphere group into isometry groups of Gromov-hyperbolic spaces. We prove that the set of simple-stable representations (in analogy with Minsky's notion of primitive-stability) and the set of Bowditch representations (inspired by Bowditch's work on the free group of rank two, generalized by Tan, Wong and Zhang) are equal. Along the way, we study the combinatorics of simple closed curves on the four-punctured sphere and prove a result which quantifies the redundancy of subwords of certain given lengths within simple words.

Links of Mazur manifolds and exotica

In this paper, we explore links of Mazur manifolds in simple 4-manifolds. We construct non-split 2-component links in $S^4$. These are used to produce links in $\#^n \mathbb{C} \mathbb{P}^2$ which are split topologically but not smoothly. As a consequence, we obtain exotic pairs of simply connected, definite 4-manifolds with boundary, as well as exotic embeddings of various Mazur manifolds in $S^4$.

Cut pairs and Morse splitting of finitely generated groups

Bowditch's theorem for hyperbolic groups establishes a fundamental correspondence between splittings over two-ended subgroups and the existence of local cut points in the Gromov boundary. While analogous results have been obtained for CAT(0) and relatively hyperbolic groups, no general theorem of this type exists for arbitrary finitely generated groups. The Morse boundary, introduced by Charney-Sultan and extended by Cordes, provides a quasi-isometry invariant boundary for any finitely generated group that naturally generalizes the Gromov boundary. In this paper, we prove that a splitting of a finitely generated group with connected Morse boundary over a two-ended Morse subgroup gives rise to a separating pair of points in the Morse boundary.

Simple Slice Surfaces

Given a simply-connected $4$-manifold with boundary the $3$-sphere, we give sufficient conditions for a knot in the boundary to bound a simply embedded locally flat surface in the $4$-manifold of fixed nonzero genus, representing a fixed nonzero homology class. In certain indefinite cases, we also give conditions for these slice surfaces to be unique up to equivalence.
