A novel numerical method tailored for unconstrained optimization problems

Abstract

Unconstrained optimization problems become more common in scientific computing and engineering applications with the rapid development of artificial intelligence, and numerical methods for solving them more quickly and efficiently have been getting more attention and research. Moreover, an efficient method to minimize all kinds of objective functions is urgently needed, especially the nonsmooth objective function. Therefore, in the current paper, we focus on proposing a novel numerical method tailored for unconstrained optimization problems whether the objective function is smooth or not. To be specific, based on the variational procedure to refine the gradient and Hessian matrix approximations, an efficient quadratic model with $2n$ constrained conditions is established. Moreover, to improve the computational efficiency, a simplified model with 2 constrained conditions is also proposed, where the gradient and Hessian matrix can be explicitly updated, and the corresponding boundedness of the remaining $2n-2$ constrained conditions is derived. On the other hand, the novel numerical method is summarized, and approximation results on derivative information are also analyzed and shown. Numerical experiments involving smooth, derivative blasting, and non-smooth problems are tested, demonstrating its feasibility and efficiency. Compared with existing methods, our proposed method can efficiently solve smooth and non-smooth unconstrained optimization problems for the first time, and it is very easy to program the code, indicating that our proposed method not also has great application prospects, but is also very meaningful to explore practical complex engineering and scientific problems.

An Optimal Projection Framework for Structure-Preserving Model Reduction of Linear Systems

This paper presents a model order reduction framework for linear systems where the $\mathcal{H}_2$ optimization is combined with the Petrov-Galerkin projection to preserve a wide range of system properties, including stability, bounded realness, sector boundedness, and dissipativity. The model reduction problem is formulated as a nonconvex optimization problem on a generalized Stiefel manifold, aiming to minimize the $\mathcal{H}_2$ norm of the pproximation error between the full-order and reduced-order models. An explicit expression for the Euclidean gradient of the objective function is derived, and a Riemannian gradient procedure with an efficient generalized Cayley update is applied to seek a (locally) optimal projection, followed by a theoretical analysis of the algorithm. Finally, the performance of the proposed method is demonstrated by a numerical example.

Source reconstruction algorithms for coupled parabolic systems from internal measurements of one scalar state

This paper is devoted to the study of source reconstruction algorithms for coupled systems of heat equations, with either constant or spatially dependent coupling terms, where internal measurements are available from a reduced number of observed states. Two classes of systems are considered. The first comprises parabolic equations with constant zero-order coupling terms (through a matrix potential term or via the diffusion matrix). The second type considers parabolic equations coupled by a matrix potential that depends on spatial variables, which leads to the analysis of a non-self-adjoint operator. In all configurations, the source is assumed to be of separate variables, the temporal part is a known scalar function, and the spatial dependence is an unknown vector field. Several numerical examples using the finite element method in 1D and 2D are presented to show the reconstruction of space-dependent sources.

Long Time Behavior and Stabilization for Displacement Monotone Mean Field Games

This paper is devoted to the study of the long time behavior of Nash equilibria in Mean Field Games within the framework of displacement monotonicity. We first show that any two equilibria defined on the time horizon $[0,T]$ must be close as $T \to \infty$, in a suitable sense, independently of initial/terminal conditions. The way this stability property is made quantitative involves the $L^2$ distance between solutions of the associated Pontryagin system of FBSDEs that characterizes the equilibria. Therefore, this implies in particular the stability in the 2-Wasserstein distance for the two flows of probability measures describing the agent population density and the $L^2$ distance between the co-states of agents, that are related to the optimal feedback controls. We then prove that the value function of a typical agent converges as $T \to \infty$, and we describe this limit via an infinite horizon MFG system, involving an ergodic constant. All of our convergence results hold true in a unified way for deterministic and idiosyncratic noise driven Mean Field Games, in the case of strongly displacement monotone non-separable Hamiltonians. All these are quantitative at exponential rates.
