The singularity category and duality for complete intersection groups

Abstract

If G is a finite group, some aspects of the modular representation theory depend on the cochains C^*(BG; k), viewed as a commutative ring spectrum. We consider its singularity category (in the sense of the author and Stevenson arxiv 1702.07957) and show that it is the bounded derived category of the Ω-Tate ring spectrum (k-nullification of the Koszul dual, C_*(ΩBG_p)). We establish a form of Gorenstein duality for C_*(ΩBG_p) and a form of Tate duality for the Ω-Tate homology. If C^*(BG; k) is a homotopical complete intersection in a strong sense there is a stable Koszul complex construction of the Ω-Tate spectrum. [v3: (1) role of ci condition clarified.(2) Novel statements flagged, Ω-Tate named and highlighted.(3) Study of the norm map expanded.]

Extra-fine sheaves and interaction decompositions

We introduce an original notion of (upper) extra-fine sheaf on a topological space, for which Čech cohomology in strictly positive degree vanishes. We apply this notion when the topological space is a partially ordered set (poset) equipped with the Alexandroff topology and the sheaves are made of duals of decomposable functors of vector spaces. The decomposition of the functor is known as interaction decomposition and can be expressed by a novel sum-intersection condition. We use these results to compute the dimension of the space of global sections when the sheaves are derived from those freely generated over a presheaf (of finite sets); this generalizes and makes topological classical counting formulae for the number of solutions of the linearized marginal problem (Kellerer and Matúš). We finish with a comparison theorem between the Čech cohomology associated to a covering and the topos cohomology of the poset with coefficients in the presheaf, which is also the cohomology of a cosimplicial local system over the nerve of the poset. For that, we give a detailed treatment of cosimplicial local systems on simplicial sets. The appendixes present presheaves, sheaves relative Čech cohomology, and their application to the marginal problem.

Non-simply connected Poincaré surgery

We give homotopy-theoretic proofs of the principal results of non-simply connected Poincaré surgery. These include the Fundamental Theorem of Poincaré surgery, the Poincaré transversality exact sequence, and the construction of Poincaré handle structures. All results apply in dimensions~$\ge 8$.

Rational torus equivariant spectra VII: the Cousin complex

We explore the analogy between rational G-spectra for an r-torus G and sheaves over an r-dimensional scheme, in the context of the author's algebraic model for rational G-spectra. In particular, the resolution of the sphere of a virtual representation in the standard model corresponds precisely to the Cousin complex resolution of a line bundle. The tom Dieck splitting for the sphere of an actual respresentation corresponds to the collapse of the Cousin spectral sequence by degrees, and the the non collapse in other cases corresponds to familiar geometric behaviour.
