On complex algebraic caustics in planar and projective billiards

Abstract

A caustic of a billiard is a curve whose tangent lines are reflected to its own tangent lines. A billiard is called Birkhoff caustic-integrable, if there exists a topological annulus adjacent to its boundary from inside that is foliated by closed caustics. The famous Birkhoff Conjecture, studied by many mathematicians, states that the only Birkhoff caustic-integrable billiards are ellipses. The conjecture is open even for billiards whose boundaries are ovals of algebraic curves. In this case the billiard is known to have a dense family of so-called rational caustics that are also ovals of algebraic curves. We introduce the notion of a complex caustic: a complex algebraic curve whose complex tangent lines are sent by complexified reflection to its own complex tangent lines. We show that the usual billiard on a real planar curve $γ$ has a complex caustic, if and only if $γ$ is a conic. We prove analogous result for billiards on all the surfaces of constant curvature. These results are corollaries of the solution of S.Bolotin's polynomial integrability conjecture: a joint result by M.Bialy, A.Mironov and the author. We extend them to the projective billiards introduced by S.Tabachnikov, which are a common generalization of billiards on surfaces of constant curvature. We also deal with a well-known class of projective billiards on conics that are defined to have caustics forming a dual conical pencil. We show that up to restriction to a finite union of arcs, each of them is equivalent to a billiard on appropriate surface of constant curvature.

Effective equidistribution of orbits under semisimple groups on congruence quotients

We prove an effective equidistribution result for periodic orbits of semisimple groups on congruence quotients of an ambient semisimple group. This extends a previous work of Einsiedler, Margulis and Venkatesh. The main new feature is that we allow for periodic orbits of semisimple groups with nontrivial centralizer in the ambient group. Our proof uses crucially an effective closing lemma from work of the author with Lindenstrauss, Margulis,Mohammadi, and Shah.

Generalized entropy of measure-induced maps

A classical result by E. Glasner and B. Weiss states that the topological entropy of a map $f$ is zero if and only if the topological entropy of its measure-induced map $f_*$ is zero, where $f_*$ is defined as the push-forward of a measure. In this work, we use generalized entropy to distinguish the complexity of these maps and prove that the measure-induced map is much more complex than the original map. Moreover, we introduce the generalized mean dimension, an invariant that is useful for distinguishing dynamical systems with zero mean dimension, including those with the small-boundary property, and we show a relationship between this new invariant and generalized entropy.

The endpoint problem for $\varepsilon$-hypercyclicity

For a fixed $0<\varepsilon<1$, F. Bayart asked in 2024 whether there exists an operator $T$ such that, for every $0<δ<1$, $T$ is $δ$-hypercyclic if and only if $δ\in[\varepsilon,1)$. We answer this question affirmatively by constructing a weighted backward shift on $\ell_2(\mathbb N_0,\ell_2(\mathbb N_0))$ with this property.
