"It from Bit": The Hartle-Hawking state and quantum mechanics for de Sitter observers

Abstract

The one-state statement for closed universes has sparked considerable discussion. In this paper, we examine its physical meaning in the context of the Hartle-Hawking state and de Sitter space. We argue that the one-state property of closed universes is fully compatible with the finite-dimensional quantum mechanics experienced by observers inside de Sitter space, and that this compatibility requires neither mixing of $α$-sectors nor any modification of the rules of the gravitational path integral. The apparent tension is resolved by sharply distinguishing the baby-universe Hilbert space, namely the space of closed universes viewed from the outside, from the bulk Hilbert space that governs quantum mechanics for an observer inside a single de Sitter universe. The baby-universe Hilbert space, together with its commutative operator algebra, is not a quantum-mechanical Hilbert space: it is merely a mathematical repackaging of classical probability theory and carries no quantum-mechanical structure at all, a direct consequence of the one-state property of closed universes. Accordingly, attempting to formulate quantum mechanics directly on the baby-universe Hilbert space conflates two logically distinct structures and leads to physically incorrect conclusions. By contrast, the quantum mechanics experienced by an observer inside de Sitter space emerges from the classical statistics encoded in the baby-universe Hilbert space, providing a concrete realization of Wheeler's idea of "It from Bit." We demonstrate these features by completely solving a topological toy model of one-dimensional de Sitter spacetime. Along the way, we clarify the physical meaning of de Sitter entropy, showing that it corresponds to the coarse-grained entropy of the underlying state.

The Hagedorn transition as a Plancherel wall: Tracy-Widom statistics, Polyakov loops and partial deconfinement

We study the Hagedorn transition of the single-winding Dutta-Gopakumar unitary matrix model at finite rank $N$. Its Schur expansion is a sum of Plancherel probabilities restricted by the finite-rank wall on the number of rows, and the Vershik-Kerov-Logan-Shepp limit shape reaches this wall when the number of boxes equals $N^2/4$. Two scaling windows around the Hagedorn point resolve the wall at different scales. In the outer window the Baik-Deift-Johansson theorem gives a Tracy-Widom crossover, and summing it identifies Liu's critical free-energy coefficient with the first moment of the GUE Tracy-Widom distribution. In the inner window the same sum determines the canonical probability law of the Polyakov loop at the Hagedorn point: the normalized loop $\mathrm{tr}\,U/N$ is uniformly distributed on a disk of radius one half, so the order parameter does not self-average at large $N$. The intensity $|\mathrm{tr}\,U|^2/N^2$ has the same limiting law as the Schur degree $n/N^2$: at the Hagedorn point the canonical degree weights become asymptotically equal below the macroscopic finite-rank wall. Under the partial-deconfinement dictionary the uniform disk becomes a linear probability density for the deconfined color fraction, and its fully deconfined endpoint is the Young-diagram endpoint of Berenstein and Yan. The Tracy-Widom mean also fixes the first finite-$N$ correction to the Polyakov-loop Laplace transform and to all of its fixed radial moments. Bessel-Toeplitz evaluations up to $N = 100$ confirm the free-energy coefficient, the uniform law, and the predicted correction.

Cassini Ansatz in the Skyrme Model

We investigate the stretching of a spherically symmetric solution in the Skyrme model. The three-dimensional generalization of the Cassini ovals is considered as ansatz of extension. The linear dependence of static energy on the longitudinal deformation parameter is obtained with a slope $σ\approx 0.14\ \mathrm{ GeV}^2$, which is in good agreement with the string tension known from various models of confinement.

Spindle solutions with hyperscalars in $D=4$ gauged supergravity

We construct new classes of supersymmetric $AdS_2\times Σ$ solutions, where $Σ=Σ(n_N,n_S)$ is a spindle. Such solutions can arise as the near horizon limit of supersymmetric, accelerating black holes. The solutions are constructed using $D=4$ STU $U(1)^4$ gauged supergravity theory coupled to a charged hyperscalar, and can be uplifted to obtain smooth, supersymmetric $AdS_2\times Y_9$ solutions of $D=11$ supergravity. We allow $(n_N,n_S)$ to be non-coprime integers, including orbifolds of the round $S^2$. We also allow the hyperscalar to vanish at the poles. The $AdS_2$ solutions with non-vanishing hyperscalar can naturally arise as the endpoint of holographic RG flows, triggered by relevant hyperscalar deformations of the $AdS_2$ solutions of the STU model.
