From Preventive to Reactive: How AI Coding Assistants Transform Developers' Security Awareness

Abstract

AI coding assistants are now central to professional software development, yet their impact on how developers think about and practice security remains poorly understood. While prior work has documented vulnerability rates in AI-generated code, a more fundamental question persists: how do these tools transform security awareness in authentic, ongoing development practice? We conducted semi-structured interviews with 15 professional software engineers and observed them completing security-relevant coding tasks with AI assistance, spanning 3 experience cohorts defined by their relationship to AI tools during professional formation. We find that AI coding assistants reorganize rather than eliminate security thinking, shifting it from the act of writing code to the act of reviewing it. This transition from preventive to reactive security is structurally encouraged by interaction models that frame code generation as a functional task, leaving security as an afterthought. Notably, none of our coding session participants specified security requirements in their initial prompts, even when they possessed the relevant knowledge, revealing a decoupling of security awareness from security behavior. We further document informal coping strategies developers had independently invented to manage AI security risk, none of which are supported by current tools or organizations, and find that the experience cohort did not reliably predict security performance. This paper contributes a practice-grounded account of how AI-assisted development reshapes the human side of secure coding, offering empirical foundations for the design of more security-aware tools, training programs, and organizational policies.

A Systematic Review of Security Communication Strategies: Guidelines and Open Challenges

Cybersecurity incidents such as data breaches have become increasingly common, affecting millions of users and organizations worldwide. The complexity of cybersecurity threats challenges the effectiveness of existing security communication strategies. Through a systematic review of over 3,400 papers, we identify specific user difficulties including information overload, technical jargon comprehension, and balancing security awareness with comfort. Our findings reveal consistent communication paradoxes: users require technical details for credibility yet struggle with jargon and need risk awareness without experiencing anxiety. We propose seven evidence-based guidelines to improve security communication and identify critical research gaps including limited studies with older adults, children, and non-US populations, insufficient longitudinal research, and limited protocol sharing for reproducibility. Our guidelines emphasize user-centric communication adapted to cultural and demographic differences while ensuring security advice remains actionable. This work contributes to more effective security communication practices that enable users to recognize and respond to cybersecurity threats appropriately.

NeuroPriv: Adversarial Representation Learning for Privacy in Wearable EEG Systems

Wearable EEG systems may expose sensitive information beyond their intended health function, creating substantial risks to neuroprivacy. In this work, we show that commonly used EEG features can reveal participant identity and demographic attributes in addition to supporting the intended cognitive task. Wearable EEG is increasingly being explored for cognitive monitoring, neurological assessment, and longitudinal digital-health applications, yet many systems assume that transmitting compact spectral or spatial features instead of raw EEG provides sufficient privacy protection. Using EEGMAT as a motivating case study, we find that compact EEG features achieve a balanced accuracy of 0.788 for cognitive-state classification while enabling gender, age, and subject-identity inference with balanced accuracies of 0.858, 0.789, and 0.692, respectively. We further show that privacy-aware representation learning preserves task performance at 0.781 while reducing these inference accuracies to 0.563, 0.467, and 0.206. These findings motivate purpose-limited representations and explicit privacy auditing in wearable neurohealth systems.

Context or Digits? Balancing Memorability and Efficiency in Virtual Reality Authentication

We present Adaptive Direction-Based Authentication (ADBA), a knowledge-based authentication method for Virtual Reality that decouples users' needs temporally by enforcing password creation based on virtual environment context while supporting both context- and digit-based entries during authentication. This design prioritizes memorability for new passwords and offers both efficient and memorable options to support users' evolving needs. We conducted a remote longitudinal study with 66 participants comparing ADBA against 6-digit PINs over 2-3 weeks. The results demonstrated that ADBA achieved superior memorability and lower perceived task load. Interestingly, no participant chose to enter via digits in the study, yet they still perceived ADBA to be highly efficiency despite longer objective entry times. ADBA also provided security benefits through randomly-generated digit representations, though some degree of password homogeneity was observed in specific virtual environments. Our findings suggest that ADBA offers solid advantages to the traditional PINs, and successfully addresses the tradeoffs between efficiency, memorability, and security under the usage scenarios considered in the study.
