Functions of Bounded Variation and Point Processes

Abstract

We investigate the relationship between the analytical properties of functions of bounded variation and the statistical behavior of hyperuniform point processes. We establish several characterization formulas for the jump part of the gradient of a bounded variation function, extending and unifying previous results by Beretti--Gennaioli and Dávila. In particular, we provide new expressions for the $L^2$-jump of the gradient using both difference quotients and Fourier transform methods. Furthermore, we connect these analytic structures to the theory of hyperuniform point processes. By analyzing the variance of linear statistics associated with bounded variation functions, we provide asymptotic estimates that depend on the specific classification of the hyperuniformity of the point process. The results show how the regularity and jump discontinuities of a function dictate the growth rate of fluctuations in point processes. Finally, we introduce an averaged quadratic BMO-type oscillation functional over translated and rotated cube partitions, similar to the one recently studied by Ambrosio et al., and prove, using results from point process, that it converges to an explicit dimensional constant times the $L^2-$jump, giving in particular a further new characterization of the perimeter of a set.

Bernstein-type bases on $q$-quadratic lattices and Askey--Wilson\slash $q$-Racah connection coefficients

On the $q$-quadratic lattices that carry the Askey--Wilson polynomials, the two roles played by a single Bernstein basis on the linear lattice, namely being a nonnegative partition of unity and carrying an orthogonal connection with the classical families, split between two distinct bases. The affine (spectral) basis retains the Bézier properties. A coprimality argument completely classifies the first-order lattice ladder: its solution space has dimensions two and one in degrees one and two, respectively, and is trivial in every degree at least three for every $q\in(0,1)$. The affine factors do not satisfy the weight-shift mechanism that produces the $q$-Racah connection for the generalized-power basis. The generalized-power basis, built from products of two Askey--Wilson monomials, does not furnish a nonnegative partition of unity in a natural positive parameter region, specified in the text; there the unique normalisation summing to unity has sign-changing coefficients. Nevertheless, its connection coefficients with the Askey--Wilson polynomials are identified completely: they are $q$-Racah polynomials $R_m(μ(k);\,ad/q,\,bc/q,\,q^{-n-1},\,a/b\,|\,q)$ multiplied by fully explicit prefactors. The proof is bispectral, valid for every degree, and rests on the tridiagonal action of the Askey--Wilson operator on the generalized-power basis, with explicit band coefficients. A scaled limit recovers the Wilson/Racah connection, while a second limit gives the $q$-Hahn polynomial part of the normalised $q$-linear connection coefficients. A numerical case study on the NACA 2412 airfoil illustrates the orthogonal machinery.

Littlewood-Paley theory for orthogonal expansions associated with root systems

We introduce the non-symmetric heat and Poisson semigroups associated with the Heckman-Opdam Laplacian in the compact setting. Based on the Poisson semigroup, we study several Littlewood-Paley $g$-functions in the spirit of Stein's work for compact Lie groups and prove their $L^{p}$-boundedness for $1<p\leq 2$ and for some of them also for $1<p<\infty$. As an application, we define associated Riesz transforms and imaginary powers and prove their $L^{p}$-continuity for $1<p<\infty$. Passing to the average with respect to the action of the associated reflection group, we obtain $L^{p}$-boundedness of $g$-functions for the symmetric Poisson semigroup for all $1<p<\infty$. In particular, our framework covers the Littlewood-Paley-Stein theory for Jacobi polynomial expansions and corresponding direct product settings as special cases.
