An integrable semi-discretization of the two-component Hunter-Saxton equation

Abstract

In this paper, we propose an integrable semi-discretization of the two-component Hunter--Saxton (2-HS) equation, the short-wave limit of the two-component Camassa--Holm (2-CH) equation. At the continuous level, we show that the 2-HS equation can be derived from a new bilinear formulation, distinct from the conventional one in the literature, via a pseudo 2-reduction and a hodograph transformation. For the semi-discrete construction, we first discretize the underlying bilinear equations in the spatial direction. We then impose the pseudo 2-reduction and apply a discrete hodograph transformation to obtain the semi-discrete system in the physical variables. To the best of our knowledge, the resulting system is the first integrable semi-discretization that preserves the two-component structure of the 2-HS equation. We construct the N-soliton solutions of the continuous and semi-discrete systems in Wronskian and Casoratian forms, respectively. The integrability of the semi-discrete system is inherited from the underlying integrable hierarchy and is further verified by a Lax pair.

The gauge action on semi-discrete Lax representations, its invariants, and Lax-Miura type constructions

We introduce and study explicit invariants with respect to the action of (local) gauge transformations on the set of semi-discrete (differential-difference) matrix Lax representations (MLRs) for a given (1+1)-dimensional evolutionary differential-difference equation with any number of components. Using these invariants, we obtain the following general results: - Sufficient conditions for nonremovability of parameters in semi-discrete MLRs. (Nonremovability by means of gauge transformations.) - Necessary conditions for two semi-discrete MLRs to be gauge equivalent. Effective use of these results is demonstrated. We present the general theory and apply it to MLRs for equations of Volterra--Yamilov, Cherdantsev--Yamilov, Toda types and Miura-type modifications. Also, we present a comparison with results of S. Yu. Sakovich and M. Marvan on gauge invariants for (continuous) zero-curvature representations of partial differential equations. Furthermore, we demonstrate procedures for constructing Miura-type transformations (MTs) for discrete (partial difference) equations (on the two-dimensional integer lattice) by means of gauge simplifications of discrete matrix Lax pairs (DLPs) and reductions of auxiliary systems associated with DLPs. This allows us to construct new MTs for (non-evolutionary) 4-point and 6-point discrete equations from [D. Levi, R.I. Yamilov, J. Phys. A 2009], [S. Konstantinou-Rizos, A.V. Mikhailov, P. Explicit quasi-periodic solutions to the discrete derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation

Quasi-periodic solutions to the discrete derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation are investigated. A Lax pair of the discrete integrable equation is derived, by which we obtain a nonlinear integrable symplectic map. Resorting to this map, the Riemann theta function expressions for discrete potentials are calculated. Consequently, we get the explicit solutions for the discrete derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation, whose quasi-periodic properties are illustrated through the cases of genus one and genus two.

Jacobi last multipliers and metrisability of Liénard differential equations

We classify non-autonomous Liénard differential equations possessing invariants quadratic with respect to the first derivative with cofactors of a special form. These invariants produce Jacobi last multipliers of the related equations. We find some families of Liénard differential equations that have first integrals fractional-quadratic with respect to the first derivative. Our method can be used to solve the metrisability problem for Liénard differential equations. A second-order ordinary differential equation is called metrisable if its integral curves are unparameterized geodesics of a Levi-Civita connection of a metric on a two-dimensional surface. We present some explicit examples. We find metrisable autonomous Liénard differential equations satisfying the Chiellini integrability condition. This result gives metrics with rational or transcendental in momenta first integrals. We derive a positive-definite metric whose geodesic flow possesses a first integral that is non-Liouvillian in the momentum ratio. We prove that the Ermakov-Pinney equation is metrisable.
