Ion firehose and ion cyclotron instability with subtracted-Kappa distributions

Abstract

In the present paper we discuss numerical solutions of the dispersion relation for electromagnetic waves propagating along the lines of an ambient magnetic field, considering parameters representative of space plasma environments, and considering the ion population described by a subtracted-Kappa distribution. We consider situations in which the ion thermal anisotropy is such that $T_{i\perp} T_{i\parallel}$, and investigate the effects of the same parameters on the ion-cyclotron instability. For both forms of instability, we also investigate the effect of the thermal anisotropy of the electron distribution, and the effect of the occurrence of a drift velocity in the electron distribution function. Among the results obtained, we show that the increase of the loss-cone feature in a bi-kappa distribution leads to a decrease of the growth rates of the firehose instability, and to an increase of the growth rates of the ion-cyclotron instability.

Anderson Localization of Ion-Temperature-Gradient Modes in Aperiodic Stellarators

The geometric coefficients of the ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) eigenmode equation along a magnetic field line are aperiodic because the line samples the full three-dimensional geometry. Starting from a reduced fluid model for drift waves [Phys. Fluids 26, 880 (1983)], we show that aperiodic stellarator geometry leads to a quasiperiodic Hill equation for the ITG mode structure. In a tight-binding approximation this equation reduces to an Aubry--André--Harper difference equation, suggesting an Anderson-localization mechanism for ITG eigenfunctions. For the continuous equation the localization threshold is identified by the onset of a positive Lyapunov exponent of the transfer matrix at the drift-wave-resonant eigenvalue. The result is a structural property of the eigenvalue problem and is obtained on the drift-wave-resonant branch of the fluid model, at weak global and local magnetic shear. We discuss what bearing, if any, this transition may have on the observed clamping of the ion temperature in stellarators, a question that is not settled by this theory.

VEQDB: A Compact and Reconstructible Multi-Device Tokamak Equilibrium Database

Tokamak equilibria are commonly exchanged as gridded G-EQDSK files whose conventions, resolutions, and machine-specific formats impede cross-device comparisons and data-driven modeling. Here, we present VEQDB, an open, compact, and reconstructible fixed-boundary equilibrium database built on continuous MXH--Chebyshev geometry and independent physical-profile roots. By decoupling authoritative equilibrium physics from rectangular meshes, VEQDB enables continuous evaluation and metric differentiation at arbitrary application-demanded resolutions. Backed by an automated numerical validation pipeline, VEQDB is structured as an extensible repository for ongoing community expansion. Its inaugural release provides 13,291 accepted equilibria across 267 conventional and spherical tokamaks, encompassing parameter-sampled Grad--Shafranov solutions, G-EQDSK projections spanning EAST, MAST-U, and ITER scales, and controlled variation families with explicit provenance. Benchmark projections reproduce normalized flux maps with RMS errors between $1.09 \times 10^{-3}$ and $1.45 \times 10^{-3}$, while compact JSON representations achieve an 89--96-fold size reduction relative to standard $129 \times 129$ G-EQDSK files. The complete initial release occupies 41~MB in raw JSON and 18~MB in compressed archives, and all records successfully passed independent reload and evaluation tests. VEQDB establishes an extensible, provenance-preserving foundation for equilibrium studies, reduced-order surrogate modeling, and cross-machine workflows.

Nonlinear Tearing Modes in Current-Vortex Sheets

The linear and nonlinear development of instabilities and Alfvén resonances in a plane current-vortex sheet is presented here for sheared equilibrium profiles $\boldsymbol{B_{y0}} = \tanh(z)\boldsymbol{\hat{y}}$ and $\boldsymbol{V_{y0}} = M_0\tanh(z/r)\boldsymbol{\hat{y}}$. We extend Rutherford's nonlinear model for constant-psi magnetic islands to account for a sheared equilibrium flow and determine the flow's impact on the magnetic island's nonlinear evolution for $M_0<1$. In this regime, the flow introduces two nonlinear contributions: a polarization current term and a modification of the saturation term derived by Militello and Porcelli (2004). We find that the polarization current generated by the equilibrium flow consistently reduces the nonlinear growth rate of the tearing mode. The flow-induced modification of the saturation term, however, depends on the magnetic-to-velocity shear width ratio, $r$. For $r=1$, the saturation term is unchanged from the case without flow. For $r>1$, it increases in magnitude with $M_0$, strengthening its stabilizing effect and further reducing the island growth rate. In contrast, for $r<1$, the saturation term decreases in magnitude with increasing $M_0$ and can become positive, leading to a transition from a stabilizing to a destabilizing contribution. Nevertheless, throughout the parameter range considered, the combined effect of the polarization current and modified saturation term is to slow the growth of the magnetic island. Finally, we find that, in the presence of Alfvén resonances, the magnetic island's growth in the nonlinear regime is no longer adequately characterized by constant-psi, and the dynamics of such islands are not captured by the model.
