A Borel Concept Class of VC Dimension One with a Non-PAC Consistent Learner in ZFC

Abstract

The fundamental theorem of statistical learning states that, under suitable measurability assumptions, finite Vapnik--Chervonenkis (VC) dimension guarantees that every proper consistent learning rule is probably approximately correct (PAC). Blumer, Ehrenfeucht, Haussler, and Warmuth showed, assuming the Continuum Hypothesis, that the "well-behavedness" condition of the concept class cannot be omitted: they constructed a concept class of Borel sets of VC dimension one admitting a consistent learning rule that is not PAC. We show that the Continuum Hypothesis is unnecessary. Working in Zermelo--Fraenkel set theory with the Axiom of Choice (ZFC) alone, we construct a concept class of Borel sets on $[0,1]$ of VC dimension one and a proper consistent learning rule that is not PAC. More precisely, for a suitable Borel probability measure and target concept, the rule has true risk one at every sample size on a set of samples of outer probability one. Consequently, finite VC dimension and Borel measurability of the individual concepts do not suffice to guarantee that every proper consistent learning rule is PAC. The result shows, with no need of extra set-theoretical assumptions, that the additional regularity assumption in the fundamental theorem cannot in general be omitted.

On two proofs of $d^2$ mixing of weighted Dikin walks

We study the mixing time of weighted Dikin walks for sampling from exponential distributions on polytopes and truncated positive-semidefinite (PSD) cones. Our first result gives a general total-variation mixing bound under strong self-concordance, $\barν$-symmetry, and mixed-trace regularity on the local metric. The key idea is to control the Metropolis--Hastings acceptance probability on a high-probability region rather than at every point. Applying this framework to the Lee--Sidford, Lewis-weight, and John metrics yields an $\widetilde O(d^2)$ mixing bound for sampling from polytopes, while applying it to a hybrid barrier yields an $\widetilde O(d^4)$ mixing bound for sampling from truncated PSD cones. Our second result establishes stronger $χ^2$-divergence guarantees and pointwise acceptance control using a new fourth-order bootstrap condition. For a suitably scaled Lee--Sidford metric, this yields an $\widetilde O(d^2)$ mixing bound in $χ^2$-divergence, improving on the previous $\widetilde O(d^{9/4})$ bound.

Overcoming the spatial order barrier for nonlinear SPDEs with additive space-time white noise

We introduce a fully discrete numerical scheme for semilinear SPDEs with additive space-time white noise that overcomes the previous order barrier for the spatial convergence rate. The scheme achieves a strong convergence rate of $M^{-1+ε}$ in time and $N^{-3/2+ε}$ in space for any $ε>0$, where $M^{-1}$ and $N^{-1}$ are the temporal, respectively the spatial, meshsizes. This substantially improves the standard spatial error bounds of order $N^{-1/2}$ in the literature.
