Physics-Informed Deep Learning for False Ventricular Tachycardia Alarm Reduction in the ICU

Abstract

False ventricular tachycardia (VT) alarms are a leading contributor to alarm fatigue in intensive care units. We propose a deep learning framework combining a 1D SE-ResNet with ICU-realistic data augmentations and a physics-informed auxiliary reconstruction task based on the three-element Windkessel hemodynamic model, implemented as a differentiable forward simulation. By requiring the network's latent representation to produce physiologically plausible arterial pressure waveforms, artifact-driven ECG patterns are penalized while true VT remains coherent across modalities. Evaluated on the VTaC benchmark under a strict real-time protocol (10-second pre-alarm window), our method achieves a 5-point Challenge Score improvement over prior state-of-the-art. Ablation studies confirm that the physics-informed objective is the primary performance driver, providing gains in accuracy, 2x label efficiency, and more localized and clinically meaningful ECG segments.

Leveraging Unlabeled Audio-Visual Data in Speech Emotion Recognition using Knowledge Distillation

Voice interfaces integral to the human-computer interaction systems can benefit from speech emotion recognition (SER) to customize responses based on user emotions. Since humans convey emotions through multi-modal audio-visual cues, developing SER systems using both the modalities is beneficial. However, collecting a vast amount of labeled data for their development is expensive. This paper proposes a knowledge distillation framework called LightweightSER (LiSER) that leverages unlabeled audio-visual data for SER, using large teacher models built on advanced speech and face representation models. LiSER transfers knowledge regarding speech emotions and facial expressions from the teacher models to lightweight student models. Experiments conducted on two benchmark datasets, RAVDESS and CREMA-D, demonstrate that LiSER can reduce the dependence on extensive labeled datasets for SER tasks.

Deep Learning Approach to Bearing and Induction Motor Fault Diagnosis via Data Fusion

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are used to evaluate accelerometer and microphone data for bearing and induction motor diagnosis. A Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network is used to combine sensor information effectively, highlighting the benefits of data fusion. This approach encourages researchers to focus on multi model diagnosis for constant speed data collection by proposing a comprehensive way to use deep learning and sensor fusion and encourages data scientists to collect more multi-sensor data, including acoustic and accelerometer datasets.

Real-Time Neuromorphic Spectrum Intelligence Simulator

We present the Real-Time Neuromorphic Spectrum Intelligence Simulator (RT-NuSIS), a modular framework to study spiking neural network (SNN) and memristor-inspired agents for dynamic spectrum access under constrained energy budgets and adversarial conditions. RT-NuSIS couples leaky integrate-and-fire neuronal dynamics, memristive synaptic models, physics-informed energy-harvesting models (triboelectric and RF), and adversary models including jamming and Byzantine behavior. We formalize the simulator mathematically, prove boundedness, present a mean-field adversary threshold, analyze per-step complexity, and provide a reproducible benchmark harness for energy-per-inference, latency, and robustness metrics. The codebase is modular, deterministic by seed, and designed for large-scale event-driven simulations.
