The para--Racah Hamiltonian as an exactly solvable discretization of the Pöschl--Teller box

Abstract

The para--Racah Hamiltonian is the Jacobi matrix $J$ of the para--Racah polynomials, taken at the persymmetric value of their isospectral deformation parameter: a mirror--symmetric tridiagonal matrix whose spectrum is a \emph{quadratic} bi--lattice, the squares $(s+a)^2$ and $(s+c)^2$ of two interlaced arithmetic progressions of unit step, and which carries out fractional revival when the grid parameters $a$ and $c$ satisfy a Diophantine condition. As the number of sites grows, $J$ contracts to the trigonometric \emph{Pöschl--Teller} Hamiltonian on a finite interval. We establish this twice: on the recurrence relation, and on the polynomials themselves, for which it is the confluence Racah~$\to$~Jacobi. Both grid parameters survive: $c-a$ becomes a scalar centrifugal term at the interior point fixed by the mirror --- the exact analogue of the para--Krawtchouk origin --- while $a+c-1$ sets two confining singular walls at the ends, which turn the spectrum into the quadratic pair $(t+a)^2,(t+c)^2$ with Jacobi eigenfunctions $P_t^{(a+c-1,\,\mp(c-a))}$, the two sublattices converging to two families that differ only by the sign of the second Jacobi parameter. The mirror symmetry of $J$ becomes the reflection about the midpoint; it grades the two families and carries the fractional revival to the limit. Algebraically, the bispectral pair of the discrete model, which generates the Racah algebra $\mathfrak{r}_1$, becomes a pair of generators of the Jacobi algebra $\mathfrak{j}_1$ --- one rung down the Askey--Wilson hierarchy --- the dynamical algebra of the Pöschl--Teller Hamiltonian.

Dipole Formation in the Two-Component Plasma

We consider the two-dimensional two-component plasma, or Coulomb gas, consisting of $N$ positive and $N$ negative charges with logarithmic interaction. We introduce a suitable regularization of the interaction by smearing the charges over a small length scale $λ$, which allows us to give meaning to the system in the continuum at any temperature. We provide an expansion of the free energy for each inverse temperature $β\ge2$, as $N \to \infty$ and $λ\to 0$. Doing so allows us to show that, for $β\geq 2$, the charges (for the most part) pair into neutral dipoles of very small size as $λ\to 0$. This complements the prior work of Leblé, Zeitouni, and the second author, which proved that this does not happen for $β< 2$, thereby implying a transition at $β= 2$ from free charges to dipole pairs. Moreover, we obtain an estimate on the size of linear statistics. The description in terms of dipoles is made via a decomposition into nearest-neighbor graphs of the point configurations, à la Gunson-Panta. This is combined with new energy estimates obtained via an electric reformulation of the interaction energy and a ball-growth method, which are expressed in terms of the nearest-neighbor graph distances only. In this way, the model is compared to a reduced nearest-neighbor interaction model, by showing the relative smallness of the dipole-dipole interactions.

On the structural properties of Lie algebras via associated labeled directed graphs

We present a method for associating labeled directed graphs to finite-dimensional Lie algebras that are $graph$-$admissible$. The proposed framework enables visual identification of key structural algebraic features. We first formalize this approach and establish several classes of Lie algebras that admit the categorization as graph-admissible Lie algebras, and then investigate suitable valid graphs for this approach by translating the antisymmetry of the Lie bracket and the Jacobi identity into rules that such graphs must satisfy. Furthermore, based on these foundations, we provide graph-theoretic criteria for solvability, nilpotency, presence of ideals, simplicity, semisimplicity, and reductiveness of an algebra. We also present practical algorithms for constructing such graphs and those associated with the lower central series and derived series via iterative pruning procedures. We further cover specific examples, such as the Schrödinger and Lorentz algebras, which illustrate the applicability of the developed tools to physically relevant cases. Moreover, we explore applications in physics, where the method facilitates computation of similarity transformations essential for determining quantum mechanical time evolution via the Lie-algebraic factorization method. We also discuss a possible generalization of the framework based on magma-gradings of Lie algebras and formulate related open questions. Our approach bridges algebraic and combinatorial perspectives, offering theoretical tools for this area of mathematical physics.

Damping of phonons in Bose gas at low temperatures

We consider a homogeneous Bose gas in a large cubic box with periodic boundary conditions interacting with a small potential with a positive Fourier transform. We compute the imaginary part of the phononic excitation spectrum in the lowest order of perturbation theory in the thermodynamic limit at low temperatures and low momentum. Our analysis is based on perturbation theory of the standard Liouvillean. We use two approaches: the first, motivated by the standard representation of operator algebras, examines resonances near zero; the second analyzes the 2-point correlation function in the energy-momentum space.
