Time-Resolution Function of the RADEX Neutron Source

Abstract

The time-resolution function is one of the key factors determining the accuracy of neutron-resonance parameter reconstruction in time-of-flight experiments. A method is proposed for determining the time-resolution function of the RADEX neutron source associated with neutron slowing down in the target, based on detailed Geant4 modeling. The neutron time spectra obtained in the Geant4 simulations are approximated by a sum of three Gamma functions with dimensionless parameters. This model is shown to describe the shape of the time distributions well over the neutron-energy range 50--300 eV. To test the applicability of the proposed approach to a source of a different design, a comparison is made with the calculated n\_TOF time-resolution function. Its shape is also shown to be well described by a three-component Gamma model.

Sensitivity enhancement techniques for cryogenic calorimeters in the NUCLEUS experiment

Phonon-mediated cryogenic calorimeters find application in rare event searches due to their intrinsically low energy threshold. Achieving optimal sensitivity for these kinds of detectors is crucial for signal identification, leading to various optimization techniques. In this work, we present two complementary methods to increase the sensitivity of cryogenic detectors read out by transition-edge sensors, developed and tested in the context of the NUCLEUS experiment. The first procedure maps the signal-to-noise ratio of the device across a wide range of operating points, to identify the configuration with maximal sensitivity to be used during data taking. The second method exploits the double readout of the detector, combining the information from different channels with a two-dimensional optimum filter analysis that effectively lowers the energy threshold. By combining both techniques at the same time, we obtain a baseline resolution of $2.94\pm0.05_{\text{stat}}\pm0.74_{\text{syst}}$~eV using a CaWO$_4$ based detector, achieving a promising result ahead of the first run of NUCLEUS at the experimental site.

Design of a Lamb-Shift Polarimeter for $^3$He Ions and Atoms

In high energy physics experiments $^3$He$^{2+}$ nucleons are suitable to test the internal structure of neutrons, which makes them the perfect substitute. Moreover, it is one of the atomic species for which high polarization values are achievable through the use of optical pumping methods. Therefore, nuclear polarized sources for $^3$He$^{2+}$ ions are currently under development. Consequently, detector systems validating their nuclear polarization value need to be established. Such a detector system, based on the Lamb-shift polarimeter, is introduced in this work. Its advantage is that it can operate at low energies in the range of 10 to 100 keV, which makes pre-acceleration unnecessary. In addition, a fast evaluation of the nuclear polarization within seconds leads to shorter disruptions for beam times. Another option of this Lamb-shift polarimeter might be that it can serve as a valuable tool for further investigation of the bound tritium decay into $^3$He atoms, similar to the hydrogen spin filter for the bound beta decay of the free neutron.

kicad-pycbnew: A Python Framework for Automated, High-Precision PCB Design in Particle Detector Instrumentation

kicad-pycbnew is an open-source Python library for the automated, script-based generation of KiCad PCB designs, tailored to the precise geometric and impedance constraints of particle detector readout electronics. By enabling the programmatic definition of copper traces, zones, vias, and footprints --- without a graphical interface --- it addresses the challenges of designing large-scale, repetitive, or parameterized layouts (e.g., Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) strips or controlled-impedance signal paths). Key features include constraint-driven routing, parallel track arrays with rounded corners, via grids with exclusion zones, and full compatibility with KiCad's native file format. Standalone operation (no KiCad runtime required) facilitates integration into CI/CD pipelines and ensures reproducibility. The library, released under the MIT License, includes validated examples such as trapezoidal RPC readout boards and extension boards for the COMET experiment, alongside comprehensive tests and documentation.
