Orbit-breaking in Deaconu-Renault groupoids and models for UCT Kirchberg algebras

Abstract

We generalize the concept of orbit-breaking from the case of a homeomorphism to the case of a surjective local homeomorphism. This method creates open subgroupoids of the Deaconu--Renualt groupoid associated to the surjective local homeomorphism. When the map satisfies natural assumptions (including being locally expanding) the resulting groupoid $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras are unital UCT Kirchberg algebras. A specific class of Deaconu--Renault systems are constructed, each modelling the Cuntz algebra $\mathcal{O}_2$. The $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras obtained from orbit-breaking for such systems come with explicit embeddings into $\mathcal{O}_2$. We also introduce a method for orbit-breaking after removing a fixed point. Using this method, we can realize all stable UCT Kirchberg algebras with each coming with an embeddings into $\mathcal O_2\otimes\mathcal K$. Moreover, we show that, given a homomorphism between countable graded abelian groups, there is a $^*$-homomorphism between orbit-breaking algebras obtained from a groupoid inclusion. In particular, we obtain explicit $^*$-homomorphisms between stable UCT Kirchberg algebras from any group homomorphism between their $K$-groups.

On a question of Blecher, Pisier, Shlyakhtenko

We show the failure of a matricial version of Grothendieck's theorem for operator spaces, thereby resolving a long-standing open question in the field. Moreover, by showing that such a counterexample can occur in the simplest context of commutative $C^*$-algebras, we address some other open questions in operator algebras. Our constructions, completely explicit and fairly simple, are inspired by some techniques in quantum information theory.

Nonclassical Weyl laws and Connes' Integration for weak Lorentz ideals, I

Motivated by nonclassical Weyl laws arising in various contexts (including Connes' approach to the Riemann Hypothesis), we develop a systematic theory of Dixmier traces and Connes' noncommutative integration for weak Lorentz ideals associated with regularly varying functions. A key ingredient is an asymptotic additivity property for eigenvalue partial sums, obtained by combining Karamata's theorem with results of Kalton and Lord-Sukochev-Zanin. This yields a direct construction of Dixmier traces in terms of eigenvalue sequences and a complete spectral characterization of measurable operators, answering a question of Connes in this general setting. We also extend to weak Lorentz ideals the Birman-Solomyak perturbation theory for eigenvalue and singular-value asymptotics. Weyl operators (those admitting precise asymptotic limits for their rescaled eigenvalue sequences) are shown to form a closed subset of the ideal, stable under compact perturbations, extending classical results of Weyl and Birman-Solomyak. We further study strong measurability (measurability with respect to all positive normalized traces). We prove that every Weyl operator is strongly measurable, so spectral measurability implies strong measurability. The converse does not hold in general; a spectral characterization via Pietsch's correspondence is obtained in the forthcoming companion pape. Finally, as an application, we establish spectral measurability for operators arising from nonclassical Weyl laws: operators associated with the Riemann Hypothesis (assuming RH); Schrödinger operators with anisotropic potentials and Dirichlet Laplacians on infinite-volume domains; Dirac operators on open spin manifolds with conformally cusp metrics; and the operator formed by the Dirac operator of the Podles quantum sphere and the Laplacian on the 2-torus.

Sharp hypercontractivity for free orthogonal quantum groups of Kac type

Let $N\geq2$, let $F\in GL_N(\mathbb C)$, and let $O_F^+$ be the associated free orthogonal quantum group of Kac type, with tracial Haar state $h$. We prove that, for $1<p\leq r<\infty$, the normalized heat semigroup $P_t=e^{-tL}$ on $O_F^+$ \cite{CFK14,BVY21} is hypercontractive with the optimal time \[ \|P_t:L_p(O_F^+)\to L_r(O_F^+)\|\leq1 \quad\Longleftrightarrow\quad t\geq\frac12\log\frac{r-1}{p-1}. \] In particular, this solves a conjecture of Brannan, Vergnioux and Youn \cite{BVY21}. To prove this hypercontractivity result, we establish the equivalent logarithmic Sobolev inequality \[ \operatorname{Ent}(|x|^2)\leq2\mathsf{E}(x,x), \qquad x\in D(\mathsf{E}), \] with sharp constant $2$, where $\operatorname{Ent}(y)=h(y\log y)-h(y)\log h(y)$ is the relative entropy and $\mathsf E(x,x)=\|L^{1/2}x\|_2^2$ is the Dirichlet form associated with $P_t$. The main ingredients are the cubic-majorant idea from the recent work of Frank--Ivanisvili \cite{FI26} and Xie--Zhang \cite{XZC26,XZ26}, and a centered third-moment estimate coming from the representation theory. We also prove the sharp Beckner inequalities \[ \frac{\|x\|_p^2-\|x\|_2^2}{p-2}\leq\mathsf E(x,x), \qquad 1\leq p\leq3,\quad p\ne2, \] whose limit as $p\to2$ recovers the logarithmic Sobolev inequality above. Moreover, when $N=2$, the results can be sharpened by replacing the heat semigroup with $\mathsf P_t=e^{-tΛ}$, where $Λ=\sqrt{I+3L}-I$. The key step is to use the graded-twist realization of $SU_{-1}(2)$ to transfer Beckner's sharp $p=3$ inequality on $SU(2)$ \cite{Beckner93}.
