Structure and Representations of a Diagrammatic Non-Commutative Tangloid Algebra

Abstract

We introduce the \emph{tangloid algebra} $\mathcal{T}_n$, a diagrammatic algebra arising from the extended tangloid category $\Ti$, and its subalgebra, the \emph{braidoid algebra} $\mathcal{B}_n$. The construction begins with the unoriented tangloid category $UTC$, inspired by Turaev's theory of knotoids, which is obtained from the unoriented welded tangleoid category $UWTC$ by removing the welded relation while retaining the forbidden moves and imposing some additional relations. Within this framework, the braidoid category arises naturally as a subcategory of $UTC$. We then introduce the extended tangloid category $\Ti$ by adjoining a placeholder morphism $\emptyset$, which allows the generators to be extended to endomorphisms of a fixed $n$-box. The interaction of the placeholder morphism with the crossing morphisms gives rise to diagonal morphisms, $/$ and $\backslash$, which are used in the defining relations of $\Ti$. The corresponding extended braidoid category $\mathbf{Brd}_{\Ti}$ is realised as a subcategory of $\Ti$. For each $n\geq 0$, we then define the tangloid algebra $\mathcal{T}_n$ by linearising the endomorphism algebra $\operatorname{End}_{\Ti}(n)$, as a unital $\mathbb{C}$--algebra presented by diagrammatic generators and relations. We also define the braidoid subalgebra $\mathcal{B}_n$, which provides an algebraic framework for the theory of braidoids. We further introduce the reduced tangloid algebra $δ\mathcal{T}_n$ by imposing two additional reduction relations for trivial knot and trivial knotoid components, and we construct a natural diagrammatic \textit{bilinear pairing} on $δ\mathcal{T}_n$ using diagrammatic reflection, composition, and closure. Our categorical and algebraic setting provides a theoretical framework for studying diagrammatic structures with intrinsic endpoints, namely knotoids, linkoids, and braidoids, and related diagram algebras.

Modular Zhu algebra theory and Virasoro vertex algebras

We develop the representation theory of vertex algebras over arbitrary commutative rings as part of a relative theory, suitable for various applications such as the study of modular forms, modular tensor categories, and sheaves of coinvariants and conformal blocks. Towards this end, we construct Zhu algebras (and higher analogues) and mode transition algebras over arbitrary rings via the universal enveloping algebra. We prove that these constructions are compatible with base change and give rationality criteria for Möbius vertex algebras over arbitrary fields satisfying mild assumptions. We apply this framework to study Virasoro vertex operator algebras over arbitrary fields. Using integral forms and base change, we extend the rationality of the discrete series Virasoro VOAs from $\mathbb{C}$ to arbitrary fields of characteristic zero. In positive characteristic, the Virasoro theory exhibits surprising new phenomena: the so-called restricted Virasoro VOA is $C_2$-cofinite and has a semisimple Zhu algebra, but it is not rational. We also show that this VOA is not simple because it admits nontrivial singular vectors in positive characteristic for every central charge. We calculate the singular vector of degree $2p$ in characteristics $p=5,7$ using Mathematica.

Modular Functors with Singularities from Vertex Operator Algebras Beyond Rigidity and Finiteness

For a vertex operator algebra $V$ and a certain category of its modules, we propose a construction for spaces of conformal blocks organized into an open-closed modular functor with singularities. This is inspired by the idea of implementing directly from the start the principle of holomorphic factorization. More precisely, using the strategy of modular extension introduced by Costello and developed further in our previous work, we build for each surface $Σ$ with at least one boundary component per path component and specified boundary labels attached to marked intervals or boundary circles a representation $Ω_V(Σ;-)$ of the mapping class group of $Σ$. The construction can be described explicitly on generating Dehn twists. This approach is a priori independent from other constructions based on algebraic geometry or topological techniques involving e.g. surgery, but we include an overview over the available comparisons. In the special case in which the module category of $V$ is a not necessarily semisimple modular category $\mathcal{A}$, the spaces $Ω_V(Σ)$ are equivalent to the string-net spaces for $\mathcal{A}$ and hence to the modular functor for the Drinfeld center $Z(\mathcal{A})\simeq \bar{\mathcal{A}}\boxtimes\mathcal{A}$. However, the construction of $Ω_V$ in this paper has the advantage of being available beyond rationality, rigidity, self-contragredience and finiteness. Moreover, we prove that $Ω_V$ satisfies excision, is finite-dimensional in the $C_2$-cofinite case and produces in genus one a generalization of the elliptic double of Brochier-Jordan. We prove for the triplet $\mathcal{W}_{2,3}$ with non-exact fusion product that the boundary conditions introduced by Gaberdiel-Runkel-Wood produce, as expected by these authors, correlation functions, provided that one uses the notion of a modular functor with singularities that we develop.

Idempotents in the Temperley-Lieb Monoid and Other Categories

This paper examines idempotents in algebras and categories that arise from factorizations of the identity morphism. In the diagrammatic and combinatorial contexts considered here, these factorizations correspond to generalizations of meanders, where a meander is understood to be a curve in the plane that wanders transversely back and forth across a given straight line. By formulating the algebra of the Temperley-Lieb Monoid in terms of planar curve combinatorics, one can understand idempotents in the Temperley-Lieb Monoid in terms of meanders. Corresponding results are shown for the Brauer Monoid and for the Tangle Monoid and Tangle Category.
