PIN-Diode-Controlled X-/Ku-Band Frequency Reconfiguration of a CPW-Fed Quasi-Yagi Antenna

Abstract

A PIN-diode-reconfigurable quasi-Yagi antenna fed by a coplanar waveguide (CPW) is presented for X-band and Ku-band frequency reconfiguration. PIN diodes are strategically introduced between the driven and parasitic elements to control the effective surface-current paths and thereby modify the operating frequency characteristics. By optimizing the diode locations, number, and switching states, two distinct operating modes are achieved. In Mode I, dual-band operation covering the X-band and Ku-band is obtained, with simulated impedance bandwidths of 9-11 GHz and 12.2-18.8 GHz. In Mode II, a simulated continuous impedance bandwidth from 10 to 14.2 GHz is achieved. The corresponding simulated peak gains are approximately 8 and 7 dBi for Mode I and Mode II, respectively. A prototype is fabricated and experimentally characterized in terms of its S-parameters, and the measured results confirm the frequency-reconfiguration behavior of the proposed antenna. The effects of the number and placement of the PIN diodes on the impedance characteristics are further investigated to clarify their roles in frequency reconfiguration and design complexity. The proposed antenna provides a compact CPW-fed quasi-Yagi configuration with PIN-controlled X-band and Ku-band frequency reconfiguration.

Ternary-Valued Finite-Difference Time-Domain Method: Asymptotic Agreement with the Yee Scheme Through Noise-Shaped Quantisation

I show that finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) dynamics can be reproduced using field variables restricted to the ternary alphabet ${-1,0,+1}$. The integration is carried out by a state accumulator, while quantisation is done by a second-order noise-shaped encoder with a separate error register. The Courant number $S$ plays two roles: it is the exact fixed-point ratio and also sets the encoder's oversampling ratio. When $S$ is chosen as a power of two, each cell update requires neither run-time multiplication nor floating-point arithmetic, and each emitted field symbol is represented by just two bits. The ternary scheme converges asymptotically to the standard Yee scheme as $S$ decreases towards zero. I report wall-clock and instruction counts relative to a floating-point reference, long-time energy integrations over $2\times10^{5}$ steps and the $S$ required to achieve a prescribed accuracy for the driven mode. Extending the approach to acoustics, Virieux-type elastodynamics and Schrodinger-equation solvers is a prospective direction towards a broader class of quantised physics solvers for resource-constrained and specialised hardware.

Integrated assessment of tritium releases from fission and fusion energy systems and their environmental implications

Tritium is a naturally occurring radioactive isotope of hydrogen; a low-energy beta emitter with its health significance through internal exposure. The anticipated deployment of fusion energy systems is expected to increase tritium production significantly. Here we present an integrated assessment of tritium generation, release pathways, and resulting environmental concentrations across existing and emerging nuclear technologies. We first compile a comprehensive database of tritium production and releases from monitoring reports and literature. Analysis of light-water-reactor operating data shows that tritium discharge levels and release pathways are governed mainly by plant-specific strategies rather than reactor power or design parameters. This pattern reflects industry operating practices and efforts, with releases remaining well below regulatory limits. Our synthesis further indicates that FLiBe-based (Li2BeF4) systems may increase tritium production and mobility through enhanced permeation of tritiated hydrogen, although mitigation strategies are available to further limit emissions. Environmental transport modeling suggests that, under appropriate siting conditions, resulting tritium concentrations remain below regulatory thresholds. Furthermore, comparative risk analysis indicates that the associated carcinogenic impacts are expected to be lower than those from fossil-fuel-based power generation. Together, these findings demonstrate the importance of a comprehensive monitoring framework for contextualizing and managing routine effluent releases across energy systems.

HVPE Growth of Si-Doped $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ on Sapphire: Influence of Substrate Offcut on Structural and Electrical Properties

Si-doped $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ films were heteroepitaxially grown on sapphire substrates using HVPE. The influence of sapphire offcut on growth kinetics, surface morphology, crystalline quality, and electrical transport properties was systematically investigated. Growth kinetics studies revealed a strong dependence of deposition rate on HCl flow, growth pressure, and source-to-substrate distance, with growth rates reaching up to 30 $μ$m/hr. Increasing sapphire offcut angle from 0$^\circ$ to 8$^\circ$ promoted a transition from multidirectional growth to highly aligned terrace-dominated surfaces, reducing the surface roughness from 14.69 to 2.74 nm. The improved surface morphology was accompanied by enhanced crystalline quality, with phase-pure (-201)-oriented $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ growth and a reduction in the rocking-curve full width at half maximum from 994 to 414 arcsec as the sapphire offcut increased. Electrical characterization of films grown on 6$^\circ$ offcut substrates yielded carrier concentrations ranging from $1.0\times10^{17}$ to $3.4\times10^{18}$ cm$^{-3}$. A maximum room-temperature electron mobility of 100cm$^2$/V$\cdot$s was achieved at a carrier concentration of $1.0\times10^{17}$cm$^{-3}$, representing the highest reported room-temperature mobility for HVPE-grown $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ on a foreign substrate. Analysis of the temperature-dependent transport characteristics yielded donor activation energies of 35 and 90 meV together with a low acceptor concentration of $3\times10^{15}$ cm$^{-3}$, consistent with the improved crystalline quality achieved on the offcut sapphire substrates. These results demonstrate that HVPE is capable of producing high-quality $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ heteroepitaxial layers with good crystalline quality and carrier transport characteristics, providing a promising pathway for scalable $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ epitaxy on low-cost foreign substrates.
