Algebraic structure in holographic tensor networks

Abstract

In a previous work 2511.21852, we explored the hypothesis that in general theories of quantum gravity, spacetime regions known as generalized entanglement wedges (introduced by Bousso and Penington) have an associated subalgebra of observables in a semiclassical limit. We defined an entropy associated with these subalgebras that obeys the same monotonicity and strong subadditivity properties as the generalized gravitational entropy of generalized entanglement wedges. Here, we test aspects of these ideas making use of tensor network toy models for holography. In this context, the analog of a generalized entanglement wedge is a region for which no region containing it has a smaller number of boundary legs. In the limit of large bond dimension (analogous to the semiclassical limit), we argue that each such region has a canonically associated subalgebra of the full algebra of observables on the boundary Hilbert space, as well as a family of unitarily related von Neumann factor subalgebras. We investigate in detail how various algebraic operations on these subalgebras (e.g. their intersections, joins, and commutants) are related to corresponding geometrical operations on the tensor network regions. We study to what extent the monotonicity and strong subadditivity properties of generalized entropy for generalized entanglement wedges follow from properties of our algebraic entropy. We also introduce an alternative entropic quantity $S(ω|| ω\circ E_{\mathcal{A}'})$ associated with a subalgebra $\mathcal{A}$ that also obeys monotonicity and strong subadditivity properties with suitable conditions. Finally, we explain how to define a type $II_1$ von Neumann algebra based on an infinite family of random tensor networks with increasing bond dimension such that the regions corresponding to generalized entanglement wedges can be associated with exact subalgebras of this full algebra.

Symmetry-Restoring Counter-terms in Massive Gauge Theories with Non-Anticommuting $γ_5$ via Gauge-Invariant Sector Decomposition

We compute the one-loop breaking of the Slavnov-Taylor (ST) identities in a massive Abelian chiral gauge theory with spontaneous symmetry breaking, regularized in the Breitenlohner-Maison-`t Hooft-Veltman (BMHV) scheme. We also provide the one-loop finite counter-terms required to restore the one-loop ST identities. The recent formulation of spontaneously broken models based on the Fröhlich-Morchio-Strocchi (FMS) gauge-invariant and dynamical (i.e. propagating inside loops) fields is used. The proposed algebraic approach holds true to all orders in the loop expansion and allows for a consistent decomposition of the ST breaking into independent sectors. By using cohomological techniques we eventually constrain the dependence of the ST breaking on the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field. This yields a set of differential equations that provide a useful check of the mass-dependent terms in the ST breaking terms in the broken phase. They can be generalized to the non-Abelian case, both in the gauge-invariant formalism and in the conventional one. In the massless limit we find agreement with previous calculations present in the literature.

Characteristic Modes of Non-minimally Coupled Thick Branes

Characteristic modes provide important information about the intrinsic properties and dynamical response of gravitational systems. In this work, we investigate characteristic modes of thick branes with a non-minimally coupled bulk scalar field. Two representative thick brane solutions are considered, corresponding to a single-kink scalar configuration and a deformed kink configuration with internal structure, respectively. By analyzing the tensor perturbation equations, we first examine the localization of the graviton zero mode in the two brane models. For both brane models, the graviton zero mode is localized on the brane. No pronounced resonant Kaluza--Klein (KK) modes are found for the single-kink brane at $ξ=1/7$. For the deformed brane, we investigate the resonant KK modes at $ξ=0.99$, finding that increasing the deformation parameter $k$ leads to more resonant modes and a longer-lived first resonance. We then calculate the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of both brane models independently in the frequency and time domains. The quasinormal frequencies (QNFs) obtained by the independent methods agree well for the low overtones. The masses and decay rates of the resonant KK modes agree closely with the real parts and the magnitudes of the imaginary parts of the corresponding QNFs, respectively.

Haagerup conformal field theory at central charge eight

We construct a chiral algebra $U$ of central charge eight inside the lattice vertex operator algebra $V_{E_6\oplus A_2}$. It is generated by two commuting affine $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ current algebras at levels $1$ and $39$, the stress tensor of the lattice theory, and a single weight-two field built from three lattice exponentials. We announce that $U$ is strongly rational and completely unitary, and that $Rep(U)$ is equivalent, as a unitary ribbon category, to the Drinfeld center $Z(\mathcal{H}_3)$ of the Haagerup fusion category $\mathcal{H}_3$. Its characters are the $γ=0$ Evans--Gannon vector. From $U$ we obtain a diagonal full CFT, and also a holomorphic $E_8$ extension on which $\mathcal{H}_3$ acts by topological defects.
