Full orbital solution and dynamical masses for a new shell-Be + sdOB binary AN Col

Abstract

AN~Col is a shell Be star that has shown transient spectral features caused by a hot, evolved companion on a months-long orbit. If confirmed, this would place it among the growing category of post-mass-transfer spun-up Be + stripped subdwarf OB-type (sdOB) binaries. Characterizing the binary orbit enables obtaining dynamical masses, to provide a rare anchor for models of binary evolution and mass transfer. We present a full 3-dimensional orbital solution, dynamical masses, and dynamical parallax, for the newly discovered Be + sdOB binary AN~Col. As a prerequisite to obtain a reliable orbital solution, we need to characterize the disk-wide density oscillation cycle that gives rise to the dominant spectroscopic cycles in order to separate the weaker periodic orbital variations. We use near-IR interferometry time series from GRAVITY to confirm the companion and to map the relative astrometric orbit. With the knowledge of the orbital period, we identify spectral lines that trace the orbit of each of the two stellar components and we measure their radial velocities to obtain a double-lined spectroscopic orbit. Combining interferometry and spectroscopy, we derive the full 3-dimensional orbital solution. The disk has completed three full oscillation cycles since 2010, with a cycle length of ~5.1 yr. The ~87.7-day orbit is compatible with edge-on orientation, but the lack of eclipses in TESS light curves limits the orbital inclination to 88.4$^{\circ}$ or less. The resulting masses are $M_{\rm Be} = 8.39\pm0.67$ Msun and $M_{\rm sdOB} = 0.81\pm0.22$ Msun. As in other Be + sdOB binaries, the estimated efficiency of the past mass transfer is unexpectedly high. Detection of a weak \spec{He}{ii}{4686} absorption and other \ion{He}{i} lines from the companion indicates that its effective temperature is close to 30 kK, and that it is a slow rotator. Stellar parameters and abundances for 3.2 million DESI DR1 spectra using machine learning

We present a machine-learning pipeline for determining stellar parameters and chemical abundances from spectra observed by the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). Building on the model-driven Payne framework, we train an artificial neural network on ~370,000 synthetic spectra spanning FGK stars, and fit the network directly to the flux-calibrated, un-normalised spectral energy distribution (SED) of each star, rather than to a continuum-normalised spectrum as done by DESI's official Stellar Parameter (SP) pipeline. Internal accuracy tests show a median interpolation error of less than 0.3% for 90% of a synthetic verification sample, and the full fitting workflow recovers input labels to high accuracy even at low signal-to-noise ratio (S/N). Validating our method on cross-matched samples of 6719 APOGEE and 3455 GALAH stars observed by DESI with S/N > 20, we recover Teff and logg with smaller systematic offsets than the DESI SP pipeline, an improvement we attribute to fitting the full SED shape rather than a normalised spectrum. We further recover 12 elemental abundances (Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Ni, Ba, and Y) to an accuracy that matches or exceeds SP where a comparison is possible, and provide four abundances, Mn, V, Ba, and Y, that SP does not report at all. Applying this pipeline to the DESI Data Release 1 stellar sample, we deliver a catalogue of stellar parameters and abundances for 3.2 million stars.

Non-adiabatic Effect on Convective Mode

The systematic analysis of non-adiabatic effect on convective mode has been conducted using wave energy relation. In the adiabatic analysis, the "propagation diagram" for convective mode is proposed as a useful tool to see its behavior. In the non-adiabatic analysis, it is found that for strongly non-adiabatic case, a monotonically growing convective mode becomes oscillatory. In this phase, the radial displacement and the distribution of wave energy show only one bump, in which the distribution of entropy energy eS almost overlaps with the distribution of gravity energy eg. Entropy energy eS seems to act as potential energy of oscillatory convection. In addition to this, this change occurs not gradually, but abruptly with change of non-adiabatic indicator.

Diameters and Temperatures VII: High-angular resolution measurements of Solar-type stars with the CHARA Array

We present interferometric measurements of angular diameters for 27 nearby solar-type stars obtained with the Precision Astronomical Visible Observations (PAVO) beam combiner at the CHARA Array. The sample spans a broad range of metallicities, includes several known exoplanet hosts, and covers evolutionary stages from the zero-age main sequence to mildly evolved subgiants. Uniform-disk and limb-darkened angular diameters were measured for each target and combined with bolometric fluxes and Gaia parallaxes to determine precise, model-independent stellar radii, effective temperatures, and luminosities. We achieve typical uncertainties of $\sim1$\% in radius and $\sim1.5$\% in effective temperature. Comparisons with multiple stellar evolutionary model grids yield mass and age estimates and enable assessment of grid-to-grid systematics, highlighting sensitivities to abundances, evolutionary stage, and proximity to grid boundaries. Our results provide empirical benchmarks for testing stellar evolutionary theory, refining surface brightness-color relations, and improving the characterization of exoplanet host stars.
