Quantum Gravity from Gluing Consistency: AdS/CFT to Spin-Foams

Abstract

We argue that BF theory with $SO(d+1,1)$ gauge group provides a SymTFT ''skeleton'' for building AdS$_{d+1}$/CFT$_d$ pairs via gluing consistency as the bootstrap principle, loosely analogous to how compact Chern-Simons theory is a TQFT skeleton for rational CFTs. This is a non-perturbative $bulk$ framework for quantum gravity. The bootstrap is formulated as presentation independence of physical amplitudes within a universal, defect-closed BF sewing calculus, which includes Wilson lines, codimension-two monodromy defects, and their junctions. The flat BF connection encodes the conformal geometry of the boundary, while Wilson-line path integrals construct candidate quantum-gravity microstates and charge sectors. When the bootstrapped spectrum has a stress tensor, Ward identities naturally connect it to the $B$-field, a relation we call generalized simplicity. In large-$N$, large-gap regimes admitting a gravitational EFT, this motivates the introduction of an effective notion of the $B$-field. In the Einstein limit, this becomes the ''simplicity'' relation used in spin-foam models. Conventional spin-foam models reach gravity by constraining BF theory. We suggest instead that BF theory is the Platonic sewing skeleton, from which theories are to be bootstrapped. Despite the topological nature of the skeleton, perturbative local bulk fields can emerge via Wilson-towers of multi-trace primaries, reproducing their one-loop determinants. We note that the BF Fourier kernel is a suggestive higher-dimensional analogue of the modular-$S$ structure. Because the bulk gluing principle in itself does not require a boundary description, the framework is conceptually broader than AdS/CFT. We sketch how de Sitter space may fit into this picture, with a natural role for observers. Our approach elevates gluing consistency to a universal bulk principle underlying theories of quantum gravity.

The Origin and Fate of Rapid Negative Modes in Coleman--De Luccia Tunneling

Coleman--De Luccia tunneling can exhibit an infinite tower of rapidly oscillating negative modes, complicating the semiclassical evaluation of the path integral. We show that this tower does not represent infinitely many bounce-specific instabilities, but instead is tied to a single underlying gravitational conformal sector. This sector is exposed in two different ways: by a large scalar gradient near the bubble wall and by the turning point of a compact Euclidean geometry. The corresponding conformal sector is already present in fluctuations about the false vacuum. Treating the bounce and the false vacuum in the same well-defined gauge and with a common regulator, we find that their high-frequency negative spectra approach one another. The ultraviolet tower therefore cancels from the relative negative-mode count, leaving a single bounce-specific negative mode. This finite-backreaction spectral cancellation provides a corresponding picture of the result obtained in the small-backreaction limit.

Higher-form Symmetries of Linearized Gravity in Maximally Symmetric Spaces

We formulate the gravitational field on maximally symmetric spacetimes as a gauge theory, and investigate higher-form symmetries of the linearized gravitational field via a series expansion in Newton's gravitational constant. To treat gravity as a gauge theory, the MacDowell-Mansouri formulation based on Cartan geometry is utilized. We show the existence of a 1-form symmetry in linearized gravity on Minkowski spacetime. Furthermore, for other maximally symmetric spacetimes (de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spacetimes) with a small cosmological constant, we demonstrate the existence of an approximate 1-form symmetry in the corresponding linearized gravity, detailing its explicit dependence on the cosmological constant.

A Concise Course in String Theory

These lecture notes offer a concise introduction to string theory, based on a one-semester graduate course taught at Fudan University, and develop the subject from the string sigma model action to the AdS/CFT correspondence. The exposition is deliberately compact, and is addressed to graduate students who seek a coherent overview of the foundations of the subject rather than an exhaustive treatment.
