Metric Variation of the Energy-Momentum Tensor of a Perfect Fluid and Its Applications to Cosmology and Neutron Stars

Abstract

We show that the expressions for the matter Lagrangian \(L_m\) and the metric variation \(δT_{μν}\) of a perfect fluid obtained in previous studies appear to be inconsistent with the standard energy-momentum tensor under general conditions. Consequently, a large number of studies in astrophysics and cosmology relying on these expressions may need to be re-examined. By performing a series of straightforward calculations directly on the standard energy-momentum tensor \(T_{μν}\) together with the particle number conservation condition, we derive an expression for \(δT_{μν}\) that is independent of the choice of \(L_m\). Applying this result to \(f(R,T)\) gravity, we obtain the exact form of the tensor \(Θ_{μν} = g^{σρ} \frac{δT_{σρ}}{δg^{μν}}\), which remains an important yet long-standing controversial quantity. This expression is shown to hold also for radiation, regardless of whether particle number is conserved. A major result is that if the energy-momentum tensor \(T_{μν}\) of the Universe consists solely of standard components (baryonic/cold dark matter, radiation, and the cosmological constant), then \(f(R,T)\) gravity satisfies the conservation law \(\nabla_μT^{μν} = 0\) for any function \(f(R,T)\). This contrasts with previous studies, which found that the conservation law holds only for a restricted class of \(f(R,T)\) functions. Applying the same formalism to stellar interiors, we derive a class of functions that preserve the conservation law. We construct a specific \(f(R,T)\) model that is consistent at both cosmological scales and in high-density objects such as neutron stars. Remarkably, the same parameter set in this model simultaneously alleviates the Hubble tension and reproduces the observed mass-radius (M--R) relation of neutron stars.

Physics-integrated neural network modeling of heat and mass transfer in cryogenic liquid storage under static and dynamic conditions

Accurate system-level prediction of cryogenic liquid storage remains challenging because reduced-order models rely on regime-dependent closures for unresolved heat and mass transfer, particularly under sloshing. We present a physics-integrated neural-network framework that combines a conservation-based zero-dimensional nodal model with data-driven closures for wall and interfacial heat transfer, phase change, pressurant quality, and liquid thermal-boundary-layer evolution. Thermal stratification and mixing within the liquid are represented through a first-order dynamical model for the boundary-layer thickness, while four operating-regime-specific neural networks infer the closure parameters for self-pressurization and relaxation, active pressurization, venting, and lateral sloshing. The framework was identified and evaluated using a dedicated database of 48 multi-stage cryogenic-tank experiments conducted in an optically accessible facility operated with liquid nitrogen. The experiments combine controlled wall heating, vapor injection and evacuation, and forced lateral sloshing, thereby covering both slowly evolving thermal states and strongly transient operating conditions. Generalization was assessed through experiment-level K-fold cross-validation, while an entropy-production penalty was included in the loss function to discourage violations of the second law of thermodynamics. Across the investigated cross-validation configurations, the global normalized root-mean-square error remained under 3%, with sloshing representing the most demanding regime. A final model trained on the complete database reconstructed the experiments with a global error of 1.6%. These results demonstrate that the proposed framework can extract physically interpretable and computationally efficient closure laws from a limited but information-rich experimental database.

Matter in Space

A new linear mapping of the linear vector space (LVS) of the octonions is suggested as an approach to the co-ordinatization of space-time. This approach resolves some perplexing issues concerning the validity of certain pre-metric notions of orthogonality and mirror symmetry. It makes explicit the nature of the six-dimensional symplectic space that was alluded to earlier by the author and shows that the null space component of the extended space can be related to ideas that were setout many years ago by H J S Smith.

New Tsallis holographic dark energy with the Granda-Oliveros cutoff in a non-flat universe: curvature tracking and DESI DR2 constraints

Holographic dark energy ties the dark-energy density to an infrared length. We study new Tsallis holographic dark energy (NTHDE), built on the exponential Tsallis entropy, with the local Granda-Oliveros (GO) cutoff $L^{-2}=αH^2+γ\dot H$ in a spatially curved universe. Writing the background as an autonomous system for $(Ω_d,u,Ω_k)$, we obtain four exact results. (i) In the closed-form solution without the Tsallis deformation, the dark energy splits into a matter-like and a curvature-like part. (ii) Because the GO cutoff lacks the term $k/a^2$ of the Ricci scalar, the coefficient of $(1+z)^2$ in $H^2/H_0^2$ is $R_kΩ_{k0}$ with $R_k=(1-α+γ)^{-1}>1$, while distances and the Clarkson-Bassett-Lu test return $Ω_{k0}$; the Ricci completion restores $R_k=1$. (iii) Big-bang nucleosynthesis locks the matter-era dark-energy fraction to $1/(1+3|w_{\rm GO}|)$, where $w_{\rm GO}$ is the equation of state of the GO mode. (iv) The finite-time fold singularity of the flat model survives curvature. Against Pantheon+SH0ES supernovae, 32 cosmic chronometers and DESI DR2 BAO, curved GO-NTHDE gives $Ω_{k0}=-0.001^{+0.041}_{-0.043}$, consistent with flatness, and $Δχ^2=-2.82$ relative to flat $Λ$CDM, but the Bayesian evidence prefers flat $Λ$CDM ($\ln B=-2.66\pm0.24$), and allowing curvature costs $\ln B=-1.39\pm0.25$. The data cannot yet measure $R_k$: the GO and Ricci cutoffs fit equally well ($\ln B=+0.28\pm0.26$). With Union3 supernovae the model is on a par with $Λ$CDM ($\ln B=+0.53$). A fraction 0.91 of the posterior reaches the finite-time fold.
