Charge exchange reactions with central and tensor interactions and nuclear matrix elements associated with double-beta-decay neutrinos and astro neutrinos

Abstract

Nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) for neutrinoless beta-beta decays (DBD) and inverse-beta decays (IBD) are crucial for studying neutrino properties beyond and within the standard model by using DBDs and IBDs. The charge exchange nuclear reaction (CER) is a realistic probe for studying experimentally these NMEs. The present work shows for the first time an experimental way to extract the Gamow-Teller (GT) and tensor (T) NMEs associated with DBDs and IBDs from the q (momentum transfer) dependence of the CER cross-section by taking into accounts explicitly both the central and tensor interactions. The present method was applied for CERs on 71Ga used for the solar-neutrino and the Ga anomaly and on 100Mo and 128Te used for DBD and IBD. Impacts of the CER with the tensor interaction on the DBD and IBD NME studies are discussed.

Measurements of jet quenching with semi-inclusive hadron-jet correlations in Ru+Ru and Zr+Zr collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=200$ GeV

The STAR experiment at RHIC reports measurements of the semi-inclusive yield of charged-particle jets recoiling from high transverse momentum charged-hadron triggers in centrality-selected Ru+Ru and Zr+Zr collisions at the nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV. The effects of jet quenching, arising from the interaction of jets with the quark-gluon plasma, are quantified by comparing trigger-normalized recoil yields in central and peripheral collisions. Suppression of the recoil yield in central collisions is observed, indicating medium-induced partonic energy loss due to quenching. The ratio of recoil jet yields for small and large resolution parameter is found to be suppressed in central relative to peripheral collisions, characteristic of medium-induced intra-jet broadening. The results are compared to similar measurements in smaller and larger collision systems, providing unique insight into the system-size dependence of jet quenching.

First Measurement of Compton Scattering on $^3\text{He}$ at HI$γ$S

The world's first Compton scattering measurements on a $^3$He target were performed to probe neutron electromagnetic polarizabilities. Differential cross sections were measured at laboratory angles of $40^\circ$, $55^\circ$, $90^\circ$, $115^\circ$, $150^\circ$, using circularly polarized, quasi-monoenergetic photon beams at weighted mean energy values of 61.5 and 97.1 MeV from the High Intensity $γ$-ray Source at the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory. Comparisons with chiral effective field theory show good agreement at 97.1 MeV but over-prediction at 61.5 MeV, motivating further theoretical development.

Measurement of the $γγ\to ττ$ cross section and constraints on the anomalous magnetic moment of the $τ$ lepton in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The production of $τ$ lepton pairs via photon-photon fusion, $γγ\to ττ$, is studied in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The dataset, collected by the CMS experiment in 2018, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.70 nb$^{-1}$. Four different $τ^+τ^-$ decay final states are analyzed. A simultaneous likelihood fit to the measured lepton transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{T}$) distributions, which incorporates information from both spectral shape and normalization, is used to constrain the anomalous magnetic moment of the $τ$ lepton, $a_τ$, and to extract the cross section of the process. The measured 95% CL interval for $a_τ$ is $-$0.039 $\lt$ $a_τ$ $\lt$ 0.032. The fiducial cross section, $σ_{γγ\to ττ}^\text{fid}$ = 555$^{+60}_{-14}$ $μ$b for tau leptons with $p_\mathrm{T}^τ$ $\gt$ 1 GeV and pseudorapidity $\lvertη^τ\rvert$ $\lt$ 3, is the most precise measurement for this process at the LHC to date and is in agreement with next-to-leading-order quantum electrodynamics predictions.
