Exploring asymmetries in three-body cLFV lepton decays: probing CP violation in HNL extensions of the SM

Abstract

In extensions of the Standard Model with Majorana sterile fermions, additional Dirac and Majorana CP-violating phases can have a significant impact on charged lepton flavour violating (cLFV) transitions and decays. We investigate angular observables associated with polarised $μ$ and $τ$ cLFV three-body decays, $\ell_α^+ \to \ell_β^+ \ell_γ^+ \ell_δ^-$, including parity- and time-reversal asymmetries. We analyse the correlations between different cLFV observables, showing that sizeable asymmetries can arise over experimentally accessible regions of parameter space. The resulting patterns of angular observables provide powerful probes of this class of Standard Model extensions and, in the event of a cLFV signal, could offer a means to test or potentially falsify the underlying framework.

Toward Simulations of Cold Baryogenesis via Supercooled Phase Transitions

Supercooled first-order phase transitions provide an attractive framework for generating observable gravitational waves (GWs), but the accompanying entropy injection dilutes any pre-existing baryon asymmetry, motivating baryogenesis during or after the phase transition. Cold baryogenesis offers a promising mechanism in which bubble collisions generate Higgs winding configurations and the Chern-Simons number through out-of-equilibrium dynamics. In the present study, we perform three-dimensional lattice simulations of a two-field model where the scalar field responsible for the phase transition is separated from the Higgs sector. Using realistic initial conditions obtained from bounce solutions, we follow the bubble expansion and collisions and study the generation of Chern-Simons number. It is found that efficient Chern-Simons production persists even for strongly non-degenerate potentials with large latent heat, which are favorable for enhancing GW signals. We also estimate the resulting baryon asymmetry using the simulated Chern-Simons dynamics and an effective CP-violating operator. Our results demonstrate that cold baryogenesis remains viable in the strongly supercooled regime, providing an important step toward establishing baryogenesis from cosmological first-order phase transitions.

Quark and lepton mixing in the asymptotically safe Standard Model

The quark mixing (CKM) matrix is near-diagonal, whereas the lepton mixing (PMNS) matrix is not. We learn that both observations can generically be explained within an ultraviolet completion of the Standard Model with gravity. We find that certain relations between CKM matrix elements should hold approximately because of asymptotically safe regimes, including $|V_{ud}|^2+|V_{us}|^2 \approx 1$ and $|V_{cd}|^2+|V_{cs}|^2\approx 1$. Theoretically, the accuracies of these relations determine the length of the asymptotically safe regimes. Experimental data confirms these relations with an accuracy of $10^{-5}$ and $10^{-3}$, respectively. This difference in accuracies is also expected, because the ultraviolet completion consists in a fixed-point cascade during which one relation is established already much deeper in the ultraviolet. This results in $|V_{ub}|^2 < |V_{cb}|^2$ and translates into measurable properties of $B$-mesons. Similar results would hold for the PMNS matrix, if neutrino Yukawa couplings were large. The ultraviolet complete theory therefore must -- and in fact can -- avoid such an outcome. It contains a mechanism that dynamically limits the size of neutrino Yukawa couplings. Below an upper bound on the sum of Dirac neutrino masses, this allows the PMNS matrix to avoid a near-diagonal structure like the CKM matrix. Thus, large neutrino mixing is intimately tied to small Dirac neutrino masses, $\sum m_ν \lesssim {\mathcal{O}} (1)\, \rm eV$ and a mass gap in the Standard Model fermion masses.

Universal Mechanism of Dynamical Memory in Light-Nuclei Formation and Cosmological Bose-Einstein Condensation

We identify a common reduced nonequilibrium structure in light-nuclei formation in heavy-ion collisions and cosmological Bose-Einstein condensation. In the heavy-ion system, eliminating a finite-lived intermediate hadronic sector, represented minimally by the Delta component, generates an exponential memory kernel. In the Fukuyama-Morikawa-Tatekawa (FMT) cosmological system, the localized collapse component is generated from the coherent field and feeds back through the expansion rate, producing the causal sequence rho_phi -> rho_l -> H -> rho_phi. Eliminating this additional dynamical sector likewise generates a history-dependent reduced equation. Although the two memory kernels and their microscopic origins are different, they realize the same generic causal structure: elimination of a dynamically relevant coupled sector leaves a memory of its previous evolution. This defines a reduced-dynamical universality class and gives a time-scale criterion separating approximately Markovian from non-Markovian evolution. As a concrete application, we consider hypertriton formation through direct p+n+Lambda and sequential d+Lambda channels. The direct channel acts as a local source, whereas elimination of the intermediate deuteron sector generates a retarded sequential contribution. We predict that the sequential-to-direct ratio depends on the duration and expansion history of the hadronic stage and increases with effective evolution time when sequential correlations are retained more efficiently. Existing coalescence calculations provide a benchmark in which this ratio changes by about 40% while the total hypertriton abundance changes by only about 20%. More generally, several independent relaxation modes in the eliminated sector generate a multi-scale memory kernel.
