Dark matter in the x-channel

Abstract

In this paper I study a class of scenarios in which a scalar singlet dark matter candidate interacts with the Standard Model in such a way that the Higgs portal is strongly suppressed, even at loop level, through a specific mechanism involving scalar mediators. The mediator carries non-trivial gauge or internal quantum numbers that allow only a quartic coupling with the dark matter, and belongs to representations with no components that can mix with the Higgs boson, so that the dark matter interacts only with exotic states. I refer to this construction as $x$-channel because no single mediator is exchanged between the dark and visible sectors, to distinguish it from the standard $s$- and $t$-channel simplified scenarios. The suppression is due to a boundary condition on the running Higgs-portal coupling, which makes the tree-level and one-loop Higgs-mediated contributions vanish at zero momentum transfer, regardless of the internal quantum numbers of the mediator. I consider here a minimal realisation, in which the mediator is a singly- or doubly-charged colourless $SU(2)_L$-singlet scalar decaying to leptons, and study the complementarity between collider, Higgs, flavour, and astrophysical/cosmological constraints. Within the scanned ranges and benchmark assumptions, the surviving points are predominantly in the region where the dark matter is heavier than the charged scalar mediator. LHC limits determine the lower edge of this region, part of which can be probed by future colliders through the production of the charged scalars. Other realisations of the $x$-channel can open different phenomenological directions to explore.

0.5 eV QCD Axion Cosmology

The best available determination of the present expansion rate of the universe using late-universe observations, by the SH0ES collaboration in 2025, differs by more than seven standard deviations from the value of the Hubble constant determined by the Planck collaboration in 2018 using early-universe observations and the standard cold dark matter cosmology with cosmological constant, a discrepancy known as the Hubble tension. Within a spatially flat, isotropic, and homogeneous expanding-universe solution of the field equations of general relativity with cosmological constant, the SH0ES value for the Hubble constant implies roughly twice as many baryons as the standard cosmology, provided that one retains the Planck values for the energy density of cold dark matter in the present universe and for the cosmological constant. A novel cosmology is proposed --- in terms of cooling dark matter made of quantum chromodynamic (QCD) axions with present number density six times that of the photons in the cosmic microwave background --- which realizes this straightforward, doubled-baryons scenario for resolving the Hubble tension.

Extraction of the Pion Unpolarized Quark Generalized Parton Distribution at Zero Skewness from Charge Form Factors

Based on a fit to experimental and lattice-QCD measurements of the pion electromagnetic form factor, using three pion parton distribution function (PDF) inputs, JAM21, xFitter and GRV, we report a data-driven determination of the unpolarized quark generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of the pion in the zero-skewness limit ($ξ= 0$). The form factor is parameterized using a flexible functional form constrained by data and embedded into a GPD framework constructed from collinear PDFs and a profile function encoding transverse dynamics. Three independent fits are reported, one to the experimental data alone, one to the lattice-QCD data alone and one to the two together, which allows the compatibility of the two sources of information to be assessed directly. The uncertainty of the extracted GPD combines the $Δχ^2=1$ region of the profile parameters with the propagated uncertainty of the input PDF error members. We consider two GPD parameterizations, P-1 and P-2, to study the sensitivity of the extracted GPDs to the choice of parameterization and PDF input. This approach provides a unified description of the pion's electromagnetic structure and its spatial parton distributions. We present the extracted pion GPDs and their impact-parameter-space interpretations, offering new insights into the internal structure of the lightest QCD bound state and providing essential input for future studies at the Electron-Ion Collider via the Sullivan process, exclusive $π^+$ electroproduction at the 12~GeV Jefferson Lab program, pion-induced exclusive measurements at COMPASS, proposed pion-beam experiments at AMBER, and phenomenological and lattice investigations for structure of the meson.

The decay rate of metastable cosmic strings beyond the thin-string approximation

In the context of grand unified theories, any cosmic strings present in the post-inflationary universe are likely to be metastable, with a decay rate set by the spontaneous creation of monopole pairs on the string. Determining this decay rate is crucial in understanding the phenomenology of the cosmic string network, including a potentially observable gravitational wave background. The bounce action governing this rate has so far only been determined using the thin string approximation or specific ansätze for the field profiles in the monopole formation process. Here we solve this problem using classical lattice simulations, relying only on the inherent symmetries of the problem. Our results indicate a suppression of the bounce action and hence a faster string decay compared to previous estimates.
