Double-differential neutron-induced cross sections on Fe-nat at GANIL-NFS

Abstract

An experimental campaign to measure double-differential cross sections (DDXS) for light-charged particles (LCPs) emitted from $^{\rm nat}$Fe was carried out in 2023 at the Neutrons For Science (NFS) facility of GANIL, France. The Medley experimental setup, specifically designed for light-ion measurements, was used for this campaign. The setup was installed in the white neutron beam line and irradiated with neutrons of energies up to 44 MeV. The Time-of-Flight (TOF) technique was used to obtain $^{\rm nat}$Fe(n,pX) double-differential cross sections for all neutron energies within the white-neutron beam's energy range. This work highlights important steps in the data-analysis procedure and reports the first results from this experimental campaign.

KATRIN experiment

Since the discovery of neutrino oscillations, it is known that neutrinos have small but non-zero masses. The neutrino mass scale, which is of fundamental importance for cosmology, astrophysics and particle physics, can be measured directly from the kinematics of weak decays. The Karlsruhe tritium neutrino experiment KATRIN measures the end point region of the tritium \b{eta}-spectrum with unrivalled t statistics and an unprecedented precision. This world-leading direct neutrino mass search experiment is characterised by a windowless, gaseous molecular tritium source and a giant MAC- E filter-type spectrometer. The precision measurement of the tritium \b{eta}-spectrum also allows the search for many other phenomena beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. The KATRIN experiment is about to reach its target sensitivity of the neutrino mass of less than 300 meV and will then turn its attention to the search for sterile keV neutrinos before the neutrino mass sensitivity is to be significantly increased once again by applying quantum read-out technology combined with an atomic tritium source with KATRIN++.

Event-by-event net-charge fluctuations in pp, OO, Ne-Ne, and Pb-Pb collisions with ALICE at the LHC

Investigations involving the event-by-event fluctuations of conserved quantities, like net charge, net baryon number, and strangeness in heavy-ion collisions, provide insights into the properties of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) and the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. Event-by-event fluctuations of net electric charge in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ and $13.6$ TeV and for OO, Ne-Ne, and Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.36$ TeV are studied by analysing the data collected by the ALICE detector at CERN Large Hadron Collider. The analysis is carried out in terms of the variable $ν_{\mathrm{dyn}}[+,-]$, chosen for its robustness against detector efficiency losses. The observed dependence of $ν_{\mathrm{dyn}}[+,-]$ on the charged-particle density shows a smooth, energy-independent decrease in the magnitude of $ν_{\mathrm{dyn}}[+,-]$ from smaller to larger collision systems. The negative values of $ν_{\mathrm{dyn}}[+,-]$ indicate a dominance of correlations between oppositely charged particle pairs compared with those arising from like-sign charge pairs. Since $ν_{\mathrm{dyn}}[+,-]$ is known to have an intrinsic dependence on multiplicity, an appropriate scaling is applied. The variable is therefore scaled with the mean multiplicities, $\frac{1}{\frac{1}{\langle N_+ \rangle} + \frac{1}{\langle N_- \rangle}}$. The dependence of the scaled values of $ν_{\mathrm{dyn}}[+,-]$ on charged particle density is also looked into. The results are compared with model calculations from PYTHIA, EPOS4, AMPT and HIJING.

Measurements of jet quenching with semi-inclusive hadron-jet correlations in Ru+Ru and Zr+Zr collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=200$ GeV

The STAR experiment at RHIC reports measurements of the semi-inclusive yield of charged-particle jets recoiling from high transverse momentum charged-hadron triggers in centrality-selected Ru+Ru and Zr+Zr collisions at the nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV. The effects of jet quenching, arising from the interaction of jets with the quark-gluon plasma, are quantified by comparing trigger-normalized recoil yields in central and peripheral collisions. Suppression of the recoil yield in central collisions is observed, indicating medium-induced partonic energy loss due to quenching. The ratio of recoil jet yields for small and large resolution parameter is found to be suppressed in central relative to peripheral collisions, characteristic of medium-induced intra-jet broadening. The results are compared to similar measurements in smaller and larger collision systems, providing unique insight into the system-size dependence of jet quenching.
