Few-Magnon Universality beyond Contact Interactions in Long-Range Spin Chains

Abstract

Quantum few-body systems exhibit a rich variety of phenomena that provide fundamental insights into universality. A paradigmatic example is the Efimov effect, in which an infinite tower of three-body bound states emerges with binding energies forming a geometric sequence. Motivated by advances in trapped-ion systems, recent theoretical work has predicted that the Efimov effect can arise in certain long-range quantum spin chains, where magnons exhibit a general dispersion $ε_k=u|k|^z$ with $z\in(0.52,0.88)$ and interact through a contact potential. Nevertheless, whether Efimov universality persists in the presence of experimentally relevant long-range interactions between magnons remains unexplored. In this work, we address this issue by investigating the two- and three-magnon problems with a model interaction potential $V(x)=V_0/(1+|x|^β)$. Our results demonstrate that few-body universality persists for any $β>1$: In the two-magnon sector, the low-energy expansion of the scattering matrix near a two-body resonance agrees with the universal form predicted by contact-interaction theory. The three-magnon bound-state spectrum exhibits Efimov scaling, with a scaling factor consistent with the theory. We further highlight the experimental relevance of our model, which can be readily realized in trapped-ion systems. Our results pave the way for quantum simulations of universal few-body physics beyond the traditional paradigm of nonrelativistic particles.

Dynamics of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates close to spin-spatial resonances

We develop a coupled-channel framework to describe the dynamics of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), with particular emphasis on the behavior near resonances between spin dynamics and spatial excitations. Taking advantage of the disparity between the spin-dependent and spin-independent scattering lengths in typical spinor BECs, the Bogoliubov modes of the spin-independent part of the full system Hamiltonian provide an efficient set of basis functions for describing the system dynamics in a coupled-channel framework. For quadratic Zeeman shifts far from any resonance, the system can be described by a single spatial wavefunction during the spin dynamics, i.e., the so-called single-mode approximation holds. By tuning the quadratic Zeeman shift, we find resonant excitations of the Bogoliubov modes, which can be classified into two categories: those with particle-hole correlations and those without particle-hole correlations. We show that the beyond-quadratic-order terms that are neglected in standard Bogoliubov theories become increasingly important for capturing the long-time dynamics of the system near resonances. The coupled-channel framework is benchmarked against results from 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equation simulations. The framework developed in this work not only provides a numerically efficient tool for describing spinor BEC dynamics governed by different length scales, but also provides a clean physical interpretation of resonance phenomena in spinor BECs. Applications of this approach to other systems and extensions to the beyond-mean-field regime are also discussed.

Microscopic Theory of Drag in a Bose Condensate Interacting with a Moving Reservoir

We derive a microscopic theory of drag for a Bose-Einstein condensate interacting with a moving reservoir. Starting from interactions between a condensate and a drifting fermionic bath, we integrate out the bath degrees of freedom within the Born--Markov approximation to obtain an effective Gross--Pitaevskii equation with a drag potential. From this potential we derive an effective drag force and obtain a closed expression for the drag coefficient, determined by the reservoir density fluctuations and the condensate density profile. As an application, we simulate the drag for an exciton--polariton condensate interacting with a drifting electron gas.

Dicke model of open-shell atoms with tensor polarizability

We study the extended Dicke model obtained from the scalar--vector--tensor polarizability of open-shell atoms coupled to a shared cavity mode. For a single electric-dipole channel, rotational symmetry fixes the tensor to vector ratio; we use $^{168}\mathrm{Er}$ with $J=6$ as a product-state example. A circular pump produces a chiral Raman vertex whose tensor-dependent matrix elements select the occupied Zeeman sector. The resulting first-order transition occurs before the empty-cavity branch loses local stability, and the ordered state is read out through $\langle\hat J_z\rangle$. A linear pump instead produces an empty-cavity $\pm x$ cat and a continuous transition into an even-$m$ cat-like state with order parameter $\langle\hat J_z^2\rangle$. With cavity loss alone, the circular trajectory emits a photon burst and approaches a Raman-dark Zeeman pole rather than a finite-field condensate. In the linear geometry, cavity-bright modes are damped toward the cat-like branch while a dark spin mode remains undamped. These are phenomena of that model; the vector-only controls show that they depend on the channel-fixed tensor coupling.
