Probing quantum nonlinear phononics in multilayer graphene with time-resolved Raman scattering

Abstract

Coherently driven phonons are conventionally described classically. Nonlinear phonon-phonon interactions, however, allow an infrared drive to reshape the fluctuation spectrum and generate substantial nonthermal enhancement of phonon fluctuations, motivating a description beyond the coherent displacement alone. We benchmark classical and semiclassical approximations against the full quantum theory and find that the semiclassical treatment substantially improves agreement with the quantum dynamics. We propose nonequilibrium spontaneous Raman scattering as a sensitive probe of these effects and apply our framework to recent experiments suggesting quantum nonlinear phononics involving the $\mathrm{E}_{1u}$ and $\mathrm{E}_{2g}$ modes in multilayer graphene. At very strong pump fields, driving the $\mathrm{E}_{1u}$ mode significantly modifies the $\mathrm{E}_{2g}$ Raman spectrum; however, reproducing the reported response at experimental field strengths requires accounting for pump-induced Raman matrix element dynamics or alternative energy pathways into the $\mathrm{E}_{2g}$ mode. Our findings extend nonlinear phononics beyond average atomic displacements to the dynamics of lattice fluctuations, highlighting the interplay between coherent motion and quantum correlations in driven materials.

Topological zero-reflection points in multi-terminal quantum wire junctions

We study scattering in noninteracting multi-terminal quantum wire junctions and show that junctions with dihedral symmetry can exhibit exact zero-reflection points for $N \ge 4$ terminals. By analyzing the scattering matrix, we identify these reflectionless points in the $(E,t')$ parameter space, where $E$ is the incident particle energy and $t'$ is the junction hopping amplitude. These points exhibit an even-odd dependence on $N$ and converge asymptotically to a common limiting value in the large-$N$ limit. We show that the reflectionless points are characterized by an integer winding number associated with the phase of the reflection amplitude, providing a topological description for their stability against weak on-site disorder. We also consider junctions with broken time-reversal symmetry and find that a magnetic flux can induce additional reflectionless points, including for the $N = 3$ case. For a four-terminal junction threaded by a $π$-flux, we identify a unique parameter regime in which the reflection amplitude vanishes over the entire energy band. Finally, we discuss experimental signatures through the behavior of Friedel oscillations and examine the stability of these reflectionless points in the presence of weak interactions.

Coherent dynamics of individual excitons in a quantum dot embedded in a nanopost

We measured coherent ultrafast dynamics of exciton complexes in a single strongly-confined InAs quantum dot embedded in a GaAs nanopost. Such a photonic structure combines a wave guiding with a cavity effect and assures an enhanced light-matter coupling over a broad spectral range of 30 nm. Coherence properties of an exciton-biexciton system hosted by a quantum dot are assessed with four-wave mixing microscopy. Our results show that this broad-band photonic structure is an excellent asset to probe coherent couplings in a small set of solid state quantum systems and to investigate the coherence dynamics within the level structure of their excited states.

Floquet spin-group theory for light-tailored spin splitting in collinear magnets

Spin groups have emerged as a fundamental symmetry framework for spin-splitting antiferromagnets, including altermagnets. For periodically driven magnets, where new spin-splitting electronic structures can emerge beyond equilibrium, an analogous symmetry theory is still lacking. Here, we develop a Floquet spin-group theory for optically driven collinear magnets by combining the static spin group of the magnetic crystal with the dynamical symmetry group of the light field. This theory determines the symmetry-allowed parity, momentum dependence, and nodal structure of light-induced spin splitting under general periodic driving. We show that odd-, even-, and mixed-parity spin splittings can be selectively switched within the same material by tailoring the drive symmetry, accompanied by distinct symmetry-allowed transport responses. We further uncover higher-order $h$- and $k$-wave Floquet spin splittings unique to three-dimensional systems. Our work extends spin-group theory from static magnets to periodically driven systems, providing a general symmetry principle for engineering light-controlled nonequilibrium spin-resolved electronic structures.
