On Solvable Automorphism Groups of Function Fields over Finite Fields

Abstract

The classical Hurwitz bound gives a linear upper bound for automorphism groups of algebraic curves in characteristic zero, whereas algebraic curves in positive characteristic can have much larger automorphism groups. In this article, we firstly investigate the solvable subgroups and $p$-subgroups of $\operatorname{Aut}(F/\mathbb{F}_q)$ where $p=\operatorname{char}(\mathbb{F}_q)$ and $F/\mathbb{F}_q$ is a function field of genus $g_F\ge2$ with full constant field $\mathbb{F}_q$. We prove that there are explicit constants $C_q^{(\mathrm{sol})}$ and $C_q^{(p)}$, depending only on $q$, such that, for every solvable subgroup $G\le\operatorname{Aut}(F/\mathbb{F}_q)$ and every $p$-subgroup $P\le\operatorname{Aut}(F/\mathbb{F}_q)$, \[ |G|\le C_q^{(\mathrm{sol})}(g_F-1), \qquad |P|\le C_q^{(p)}(g_F-1). \] In particular, one may take $C_q^{(\mathrm{sol})}=12q^2(q-1)$ for $q\ge4$ and $C_q^{(p)}=5q$ for every $q$. In the second part of this article , we give the asymptotic lower bounds for solvable automorphism groups. For every $q$ there is an explicit constant $L_q>0$ and a sequence of function fields $F_i/\mathbb{F}_q$ with $g_{F_i}\to\infty$, together with solvable subgroups $G_i\le\operatorname{Aut}(F_i/\mathbb{F}_q)$, such that \[ |G_i|\ge L_q(g_{F_i}-1). \] For $q\ge5$ one may take $L_q=2q(q-1)/(q-2)$. If $q=r^2$ with $r\ge3$, an unramified tower construction over the Hermitian curve gives the stronger choice $L_q=2r^3(r-1)/(r-2)$. Moreover, as an application of our tower construction above, we improve the lower bound of Ma and Xing to $B_q\ge 2(q-1)/(q-2)$ for $q\ge 5$. As another application, we extend our method for bounding solvable automorphism groups to $p$-solvable subgroups, obtaining explicit linear bounds in terms of the genus.

Sporadic points on $X_0(N)$

We determine all integers $N$ for which the modular curve $X_0(N)$ admits a sporadic CM point (of any degree), as well as all $N$ for which $X_0(N)$ admits a sporadic point, whether CM or non-CM. In a sense, our results generalize the classification of isogenies of elliptic curves over $\Q$ due to Mazur and Kenku: their work determines the $X_0(N)$ with degree 1 sporadic points, whereas we classify all $X_0(N)$ that have a sporadic point of arbitrary degree.

On the Number of Prime Factors of Consecutive Integers

We prove that there are infinitely many $n$ such that $ω(n+k) \ll \log k$ for all integers $k \ge 2$. This improves on a result of Tao and Teräväinen (2025), who have $O(k)$ in place of $O(\log k)$. As corollaries, we make progress on a number of questions posed by Erdős. The proof is based on a quantitative refinement of the Tao-Teräväinen probabilistic argument, combining a refined sieve construction with upper bounds for high moments and the resulting tail estimates. Moreover, we formulate a conjecture on integers with many prime factors based on Cramér-type random models. Assuming this conjecture, the main bound is essentially sharp.
