Amplitude analysis of $ψ(3686)$ radiative decays into $π^{0} π^{0}$ system

Abstract

A model-independent amplitude analysis of the $π^{0} π^{0}$ system produced in radiative $ψ(3686)$ decays is presented. The analysis is based on the unique dataset of $(2712.4\pm14.3)\times10^6$ $ψ(3686)$ decays collected by the BESIII detector. Scalar and tensor partial-wave contributions are obtained as piecewise functions of $M_{\text{inv}}(π^{0} π^{0})$ with minimal model assumptions. The observed contribution of the scalar partial wave exhibits similar behavior to the one reported in the study of radiative $J/ψ$ decays, while the tensor contributions provide no evidence for resonance-like structures except for the clearly visible $f_2(1270)$. The results are presented in the form of log-likelihood scans in $M_{\text{inv}}(π^{0} π^{0})$ bins, which preserve all the statistical information and account for relevant systematic uncertainties. The model-independent description provided in this paper allows to combine the presented results with other related data in the development of phenomenological models.

Cosmic Rays as an Interdisciplinary Earth Observation Tool: From Particle Physics and Atmospheric Processes to Geosciences and Urban Science

The exploration of cosmic rays, which are high-energy particles originating from space and the atmosphere, has historically been associated with particle physics and astrophysics. In the last 20 years, these particles have evolved into valuable tools for observing Earth's systems. This review compiles the use of cosmic rays in three primary areas: (1) particle physics and atmospheric processes, which include cosmic- ray-induced cascades, ionization, and their impact on atmospheric chemistry and radiation; (2) geosciences, where cosmogenic radionuclides assist in the dating of geological materials and cosmic-ray neutrons are used for large-scale monitoring of soil moisture and snow water equivalents; and (3) urban science, where cosmic- ray muons are employed for non-invasive subsurface imaging and, when paired with distributed sensors, serve as the basis for smart city monitoring. This review places particular emphasis on integrating these methods with remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS), which helps close the persistent scale gap between point measurements and satellite observations, thereby enabling three-dimensional digital representations of subsurfaces. This review concludes by discussing data standards, their integration into operational Earth observation workflows, and future research directions.

Measuring the Acceleration-Dependent Temperature of the Minkowski Vacuum

Relativistic quantum field theory is the structure on which the Standard Model and beyond-Standard Model physics are built. One of its most striking predictions is the Unruh effect: an observer undergoing uniform linear acceleration measures the Minkowski vacuum as a thermal bath at a fixed temperature. Despite decades of theoretical interest, this effect has never been directly observed. We propose to use the high acceleration gradients provided by wakefield accelerators, coupled with a forward laboratory-frequency ~THz detector array, to measure the resulting forward-beamed radiation, and outline the unique signature provided by quantum detailed balance to extract the signal from backgrounds. While challenging, such a measurement appears within reach of present-day accelerator and detector technologies.

Search for the $\boldsymbol{B^0 \to K^0_{\rm S} τ^+ τ^-}$ decay

We present the first search for $B^0 \to K^0_{\rm S} τ^+τ^-$ decays. We look for signal decays in $B^0\bar B^0$ events produced in asymmetric-energy electron-positron collisions. This work uses samples from the Belle and Belle~II detectors, comprising 1.16 billion $Υ(4S)$ events. In $Υ(4S)\to B^0\bar{B}^0$ decays, the non-signal $\bar{B}^0$ meson is fully reconstructed in a hadronic channel. For the signal $B^0$ meson, $τ$-lepton decays into final states with a single charged particle are selected. We observe no evidence for the signal and set an upper limit on the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(B^0\to K^0_{\rm S} τ^+τ^-) < 8.3 \times 10^{-4}$ at the 90\% confidence level. Combining this with the recent measurement of the isospin-partner decay $B^+\to K^+τ^+τ^-$, we determine an upper limit $\mathcal{B}(B\to Kτ^+τ^-) < 5.4\times10^{-4}$ at the 90\% confidence level.
