An analog of Quillen-Venkov for eventually negligible classes and radicality for finite irreducible Coxeter groups

Abstract

Let $G$ be a finite group, $M$ a $G$-module, and $F$ a field. A continuous group homomorphism $i : Γ_L=\text{Gal}(L_{\text{sep}}/L) \rightarrow G$ yields a homomorphism $i^* : H^d(G,M) \rightarrow H^d(L,M)$ for every $d\in \mathbb{N}$. An element $u \in H^d(G,M)$ is negligible over $F$ if $u\in\ker(i^*)$ for every $i$ and every field extension $L/F$. If $M=\mathbb{F}_p$ for a prime $p$ with a trivial $G$-action, an element $u$ is eventually negligible over $F$ if $u^k$ is negligible over $F$ for some $k\geq1$. The (eventually) negligible elements over $F$ form an ideal of the cohomology ring $H^*(G,\mathbb{F}_p)$, called the (eventually) negligible ideal. We prove an analog of Quillen-Venkov for eventually negligible elements. An element $u\in H^*(G,\mathbb{F}_p)$ is eventually negligible over $F$ if and only if the restriction of $u$ to the cohomology of each elementary abelian $p$-subgroup of $G$ is eventually negligible over $F$. Paired with applications of a Gysin-type long exact sequence, we identify generators of the negligible ideal over $\mathbb{Q}$ of the mod-2 cohomology of dihedral groups, cyclic $2$-groups, and generalized quaternion groups. We prove that the negligible ideal over $\mathbb{Q}$ of the mod-2 cohomology of every finite irreducible Coxeter group is radical. The result was previously known for Weyl groups; we prove it for the remaining non-Weyl types $I_2(m)$, $H_3$, and $H_4$.

The Ramanujan-Petersson and Selberg conjectures for Maass forms

We prove the Ramanujan-Petersson conjecture for Maass forms of the group $SL(2,Z)$, with the help of automorphic distribution theory and pseudodifferential analysis. The first notion is an alternative to classical automorphic function theory, in which the plane takes the place usually ascribed to the hyperbolic half-plane. The Selberg conjecture for Hecke's group $Γ_0(M)$ follows as well.

Spherical growth of reciprocal classes in the Hecke Groups

Let $Γ_p$ denote the Hecke group where $p=2r$, $r>0$. Let $\mathcal{N}_l$ denote the set of conjugacy classes of reciprocal elements of word length $l$ in $Γ_p$. We prove that for $l \to \infty$, $$|\mathcal{N}_l| = \mathcal{O}\left(\left\lfloor \tfrac{l+1}{2} \right\rfloor^{s-1} ρ^{\left\lfloor \tfrac{l+1}{2} \right\rfloor} \right), $$ where $\mathcal O$ is the `big O', $ρ\in [\sqrt{2}, 2]$ is the unique positive real root of $$ p(x) = x^{r+1} - 2\sum_{j=1}^{r-1} x^{r-j} - 1, $$ and $s$ is the maximal multiplicity among the roots of $p(x)$. Our method relies on the free product structure of the Hecke group $Γ_p$, a combinatorial counting function, and recurrence relations derived from cyclically reduced representatives. We also derive that the growth rate of the primitive reciprocal classes of word length $l$ is in agreement with that of $\mathcal{N}_l$. This work generalizes previous results for odd $p$ and provides an explicit asymptotic bound for all Hecke groups.

Cobordism, spin structures, and profinite completions

Let $M$ and $N$ be smooth closed connected aspherical manifolds with good (in the sense of Serre) fundamental groups $G$ and $H$. We show that if $\widehat G\cong \widehat H$, then $M$ and $N$ are cobordant and the signatures of $M$ and $N$ agree modulo $8$. Moreover, $M$ is spin (resp. spin$^\mathbb{C}$) if and only if $N$ is spin (resp. spin$^\mathbb{C}$). We consider some analogous results for compact connected aspherical manifolds.
