Renormalization of Quantum Gravity with Lagrange Multiplier Fields

Abstract

We study the renormalization of Einstein gravity coupled to a scalar field in the Lagrange multiplier (LM) formulation, where a pair of quantum LM fields, $(λ'_{μν},σ')$, is coupled to the gauge-fixed gravitational and scalar equations of motion. Using the fact that in this approach there are no higher loop corrections, we show that renormalizing the two quantum LM fields at one-loop order absorbs, off-shell, five out of the six independent divergent structures. The remaining off-shell counterterm, proportional to $ (\partial_μ\barϕ\,\partial^μ\barϕ)^2, $ is nonzero on shell and cannot be absorbed by any LM field redefinition, since such redefinitions generate only counterterms that vanish on shell. In contrast, in pure gravity (no matter), the LM renormalization absorbs all one-loop divergences and no additional counterterms are required. The LM formulation therefore provides a sharp off-shell separation between equation-of-motion divergences, absorbed into LM field renormalizations, and the single irreducible structure.

A Spectral Criterion for Emergent Gravity

We give a source-resolved spectral criterion for long-range tensor exchange between conserved matter sources. Exact channel elimination preserves the propagation kernel together with the source and readout maps and the direct response. Common-space estimates control the residue at the displaced critical root of a finite approximation. A positive Källen-Lehmann representation identifies this residue with a zero-invariant-mass atom even at a continuum endpoint. For a complete positive Lorentz-covariant conserved stress tensor we classify the null-shell measure and prove that its TT atomic weight vanishes. A reduced compact spectral realisation instead carries internal tensor vertices into an external two-helicity response. Conservation reduces the leading vertex of localised stationary matter to its total energy. The mixed residue then factorises into the two energies and a common propagation coefficient. Spatial resolvent estimates determine the potential and force with finite-size corrections. Normalisation through the matter vertex leaves one dimensional calibration for the overall Planck scale. The spectral residue fixes the dimensionless exchange strength. The resulting response admits an Einstein-matter effective description under the stated positivity and helicity assumptions together with universal soft coupling and local nonlinear consistency.

$\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills thermodynamics from effective field theory

We compute the weak-coupling free energy density of pure four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory through second order in the 't Hooft coupling $λ$ at finite temperature using effective-field-theory methods. The contribution from the hard scale $T$ is obtained from massless three-loop vacuum diagrams in the full theory, and that from the electric scale $\sqrtλ\,T$ from a two-loop calculation in the dimensionally reduced three-dimensional effective theory. In contrast to $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM, the theory is asymptotically free: the coupling-renormalization counterterm, together with the EFT unit-operator counterterm, cancels all $1/ε$ poles. The remaining renormalization-scale dependence is fixed by the one-loop beta function. The expansion reproduces earlier results through order $λ^{3/2}$, and the order-$λ^2$ term is new.

Coarse-Graining and Long-Range Response in Generated Systems

We study when a reduced description preserves the response to an applied source. For systems defined by continuously differentiable state updates and observations a bounded surjective linear coarse map gives differentiable descent when the projected maps are constant on each fibre. Their common source response is then preserved on the invertible domain. For approximate descent an exact error identity separates defects in the update and source coupling from defects in the readout and direct term. Resolvent and contour estimates carry these errors and the displacement of the reference branch to visible poles and their residues at shifted critical roots. In a reciprocal Hilbert-space realisation an isolated finite-dimensional critical subspace with a positive crossing matrix has a positive-semidefinite finite-rank residue when the endpoint operator is self-adjoint and the complementary inverse is bounded. Source overlap determines its visible directions. Arithmetic and reflecting-heat examples separate stationary response preservation from memoryless dynamical closure. In the two-mode example pole displacement decays geometrically with the retained memory length. The residue error includes an additional factor of that length. For a matched vacuum covariance the residue is the zero-mass atom of its positive spectral measure. This identification uses the same physical projection and source pairing together with the continuation and subtraction conventions and endpoint matching.
