SL(n)-covariant symmetric tensor valuations on polytopes

Abstract

All $\operatorname{SL}(n)$-covariant symmetric tensor valuations on convex polytopes in $\mathbb R^n$ are completely classified without any continuity assumptions. It is shown that the only such valuation is the moment tensor.

Non-convex polytopes realizing kissing contact graphs in dimensions 5-7

Each of the 12 known conjecturally optimal kissing configurations in dimensions 5, 6, and 7 carries a contact-graph polytope: a polytope whose vertices are the configuration points and whose edges are exactly its contacts. Eight of these polytopes are non-convex and distinct from their convex hulls, which include longer edges. Each polytope is radial about the sphere's center: its boundary meets every ray from the center exactly once. It is the unique radial polytope with those vertices and edges. Seven of the nine non-lattice configurations carry polytopes constructed from the lattice contact polytope in the same dimension by splitting some facets and reassembling the pieces. This split-and-reassemble construction describes the configurations by facets rather than by layers. The fold angles of the reassembled facets explain the inner products $1/(10-n)$, giving $1/5$, $1/4$, and $1/3$ in dimensions 5, 6, and 7, respectively. The contact graphs of all 12 configurations are infinitesimally rigid. We also prove that $Q_5$ and $R_5$ are infinitesimally jammed, extending the 10 previously established cases to all 12 configurations. All mathematical computations use exact arithmetic.

Napoleonic triangles on the sphere from similar chord triangles

We study a variant of Napoleon's construction on the unit sphere, in which the triangles erected on the sides of a spherical triangle $ABC$ are required to have similar isosceles chord triangles with apex angle $β\in(0,π/2)$. For a non-equilateral $ABC$, we prove that the triangle $XYZ$ of spherical circumcentres is equilateral if and only if $\cos(θ_a+θ_b+θ_c\pmΩ/2)=0$, where $θ_a,θ_b,θ_c$ are the base angles of the isosceles spherical triangles $XBC$, $YCA$, $ZAB$, $Ω$ is the area of $ABC$, and the sign $+$ (resp.~$-$) corresponds to the outward (resp.~inward) construction. We derive from this an explicit classification in terms of two quadrics and a cubic inequality. It recovers the theorem of Dipierro, Noakes and Valdinoci for $β=π/3$, and exhibits three families of solutions for $β>π/3$, together with a fourth one when $\cosβ<1/4$.

On the Solution Sets of the Cone-Volume Map

For a fixed set $U=(u_1,\ldots,u_m)$ of outer unit normals, we consider the cone-volume map which associates to a vector of support numbers $b\in\mathbb R^m_{> 0}$ the cone-volume vector $γ\in\mathbb R^m$ of the polytope \[ P(U,b)=\{x\in\mathbb{R}^n:U^\top x\leq b\}. \] We study its fibers $S(U,γ)$ over prescribed cone-volume vectors $γ$, with particular emphasis on finiteness and non-uniqueness. We give characterizations of the irreducibility of $U$ in terms of properties of the cone-volume map and its solution sets. In particular, for irreducible $U$, we show that $S(U,γ)$ is finite for all $γ$ outside a set of measure zero in the cone-volume cone, and we give an explicit upper bound for its cardinality. In the planar case, we prove that $S(U,γ)$ has semialgebraic dimension at most one for arbitrary $U$. Moreover, for every $U\in\mathcal{U}(2,m)$ with $m\geq 4$, there exists a cone-volume vector $γ$ for which $S(U,γ)$ contains at least two distinct elements. As a consequence, there exist two distinct smooth planar convex bodies with the same cone-volume measure. Finally, for $U$ in general position, we show that the number of solutions is odd for every cone-volume vector outside the exceptional set.
