Failure of direct finiteness for group algebras in every odd characteristic

Abstract

For every odd prime $p$, we construct a finitely presented group $G_p$ and elements $a,b,c\in\mathbb{F}_p[G_p]$ such that $ab=1$, $ac=0$, and $c\ne0$. Thus $\mathbb{F}_p[G_p]$, and the group algebra over every field of characteristic $p$, fails to be directly finite. The construction combines a single exceptional self-product pair with signed bipartite cancellation. New integer matching data realize the exceptional self-intersection while retaining a strict squared-word decay estimate. We verify the adaptations needed for the earlier bounded-path and planar-localization arguments. A minimal disk picture protects the identity coefficient of $c$, so the proof does not require torsion-freeness.

The Ramanujan-Petersson and Selberg conjectures for Maass forms

We prove the Ramanujan-Petersson conjecture for Maass forms of the group $SL(2,Z)$, with the help of automorphic distribution theory and pseudodifferential analysis. The first notion is an alternative to classical automorphic function theory, in which the plane takes the place usually ascribed to the hyperbolic half-plane. The Selberg conjecture for Hecke's group $Γ_0(M)$ follows as well.

Spherical growth of reciprocal classes in the Hecke Groups

Let $Γ_p$ denote the Hecke group where $p=2r$, $r>0$. Let $\mathcal{N}_l$ denote the set of conjugacy classes of reciprocal elements of word length $l$ in $Γ_p$. We prove that for $l \to \infty$, $$|\mathcal{N}_l| = \mathcal{O}\left(\left\lfloor \tfrac{l+1}{2} \right\rfloor^{s-1} ρ^{\left\lfloor \tfrac{l+1}{2} \right\rfloor} \right), $$ where $\mathcal O$ is the `big O', $ρ\in [\sqrt{2}, 2]$ is the unique positive real root of $$ p(x) = x^{r+1} - 2\sum_{j=1}^{r-1} x^{r-j} - 1, $$ and $s$ is the maximal multiplicity among the roots of $p(x)$. Our method relies on the free product structure of the Hecke group $Γ_p$, a combinatorial counting function, and recurrence relations derived from cyclically reduced representatives. We also derive that the growth rate of the primitive reciprocal classes of word length $l$ is in agreement with that of $\mathcal{N}_l$. This work generalizes previous results for odd $p$ and provides an explicit asymptotic bound for all Hecke groups.

Cobordism, spin structures, and profinite completions

Let $M$ and $N$ be smooth closed connected aspherical manifolds with good (in the sense of Serre) fundamental groups $G$ and $H$. We show that if $\widehat G\cong \widehat H$, then $M$ and $N$ are cobordant and the signatures of $M$ and $N$ agree modulo $8$. Moreover, $M$ is spin (resp. spin$^\mathbb{C}$) if and only if $N$ is spin (resp. spin$^\mathbb{C}$). We consider some analogous results for compact connected aspherical manifolds.
