Anti-synchronized collective rotation in magnetic colloidal particles under rotating magnetic fields

Abstract

Collective synchronization is a common response of interacting magnetic particles subjected to rotating external fields. Here we demonstrate a distinct nonequilibrium state in a two-dimensional cluster of magnetic colloidal particles in which the ordered crystalline core rotates, on average, opposite to the direction of the applied rotating magnetic field, while the defect-rich outer region continues to rotate with the drive. We term this state anti-synchronized collective rotation. By combining structural, spectral, bond-resolved, and layer-resolved torque analyses, we show that anti-synchronization is associated with a broader defect-rich interface, enhanced and dynamically heterogeneous bond deformation, and a reorganization of torque transmission between the surface and the crystalline interior. In the synchronized state, steric torques compensate the opposing dipolar contribution in the outer core, maintaining a positive net interaction torque. In the anti-synchronized state this compensation becomes insufficient, producing a negative net torque in theouter core and enabling core-surface rotational decoupling. Increasing the driving frequency restores coherent rotation through a transition characterized by competing positive- and negative-angular-velocity populations and hysteresis, consistent with a discontinuous, first-order-like dynamical transition. These results demonstrate how deformation and spatial redistribution of interaction torques can generate counter-rotating collective states in driven colloidal matter.

Dense granular rheology from fluctuations

A governing equation for the granular temperature of flows past the jamming point is proposed and validated term-by-term with discrete element simulation. We measure and construct models for transport coefficients that do not diverge near the jamming fraction. As a limiting case of our equation, we derive the granular fluidity equation and find disagreement between the preexisting parametrizations of nonlocal granular fluidity, extended kinetic theory, and our discrete element simulations that is resolved by our continuum model.

Hydrogel mechanics below swelling equilibrium

Hydrogels are versatile soft materials whose behavior arises from complex polymer-network-fluid interactions. Combining theory and experiments, we show that their mechanics simplify greatly below swelling equilibrium. In this regime, mixing and pore pressures effectively control local hydration, relegating polymer-network elasticity to accommodate the deformed shape. This mechanical hierarchy renders partially-dried hydrogels analogous to incompressible solids with environment-driven target volumes, enabling a staggered mechanical description that accurately captures their state and behavior.

Nonlocal Electrostatic Field Theory from Microscopic Description

The study of electric fields in soft materials converges either to the study of point-like particles (local) in nonlinear theories or to the use of particles with finite sizes in nonlocal linear theories. In this work, we start from the microscopic equations of motion and construct a unified mean field Fokker-Planck equation that describes the non-equilibrium electrostatics of nonlocal nonlinear systems. We obtain a generalized Poisson-Boltzmann equation for such systems, as well as their electrostatic free energy expression. In the linear approximation, we obtain an anisotropic susceptibility in an isotropic fluid, which allows for local linear response inversion in electrostatics.
