An example of a non-sofic hyperbolic group

Abstract

We construct a torsion-free, two-dimensional, word-hyperbolic group which is not sofic. Our construction builds on OpenAI's construction of a non-residually finite hyperbolic group, see OpenAI 252.

Linear $2$-Group Actions With Exactly One Regular Orbit

Let $G$ be a finite $2$-group and $V$ a finite faithful irreducible $G$-module. We show that if $G$ has exactly one regular orbit on $V$, then the characteristic $q$ of $V$ is a Fermat prime, $V$ is irreducible over ${\Bbb F}_q$, ${\rm dim}_{{\Bbb F}_q}V$ is a power of $2$, and the centraliser of $G$ in ${\rm GL}(V)$ embeds into $G$. For every Fermat prime $q$ and every $m\ge 1$ we determine the largest orbit size $2^{x_m}$ of a Sylow $2$-subgroup $P_m$ of ${\rm GL}_{2^{m-1}}(q)$ on its natural module $V_m$, and the number of orbits of this size, which is $1$, $2$, or $3$. Our main result is that for every Fermat prime $q$ and every $m\ge 1$ there is an irreducible subgroup of $P_m$ of order $2^{x_m}$ that has exactly one regular orbit on $V_m$. In this respect $p=2$ behaves like $p=3$, and unlike the Mersenne primes $p\ge 7$ studied in an earlier paper. The proof places a group related to a Singer cycle into every block of $q-1$ coordinates. This reduces the problem, for all Fermat primes at once, to a question about subgroups of a Sylow $2$-subgroup of a symmetric group acting on subsets, which we answer by means of fibre products. We also determine which largest orbits occur in two small levels, and we classify the examples in some small cases with the help of a computer.

Maximal ranks of free abelian subgroups of generalized cactus groups associated with finite Coxeter systems

We determine the maximum ranks of free abelian subgroups of generalized cactus groups associated with finite Coxeter systems. To obtain the upper bounds, we use the cubical flat torus theorem of Wise and Woodhouse. We then verify the sharpness of these upper bounds by constructing free abelian subgroups of the corresponding ranks. Our result shows that the maximal ranks of free abelian subgroups of ordinary cactus groups can be larger than conjectured by Genevois. As an application, we show that these groups are not quasi-isometric to any right-angled Artin group unless they are virtually free abelian.

Classification of finite subgroups of generalized cactus groups

We classify the finite groups that embed into generalized cactus groups $C_W$ associated with arbitrary Coxeter systems $(W,S)$. Every finite subgroup is conjugate to a subgroup of $C_{W_T}$ for some spherical subset $T\subseteq S$. This reduces the classification to explicit lists of finite groups for the finite irreducible Coxeter systems. For types $B$, $D$, $E$, $F$, and $H$, we analyze cube stabilizers to obtain these lists. For type $I_2(p)$, we determine $C_{W(I_2(p))}$ directly from its defining presentation. We explicitly realize every listed group as a subgroup of the corresponding generalized cactus group. When $S$ is finite, we determine the largest order and all possible orders of finite subgroups of $C_W$. In type $A$, we prove directly that a finite group embeds into the ordinary cactus group $J_n$ if and only if it embeds into a Sylow $2$-subgroup of the symmetric group $S_n$. We also give weighted embedding criteria in types $A$ and $B$ and counterexamples to Genevois's conjecture on finite subgroups of cactus groups.
