Rank and Border Rank Additivity of Complex Tensors with a Hankel Summand

Abstract

We prove that the CP rank of a complex Hankel tensor of order $m\ge3$ is additive with that of every complex tensor of the same order. Together with the known equality of CP and symmetric ranks for complex Hankel tensors, this yields symmetric rank additivity whenever the other summand has equal CP and symmetric ranks. We also prove that ordinary and symmetric border ranks coincide and are additive on direct sums of complex Hankel tensors of any common order at least three. Their common value is the sum of the middle binary catalecticant ranks. For order three, we further prove border-rank additivity when the other summand has border rank at most three, or is symmetric with at most five essential variables.

Root of the generic cubic as a power series in the discriminant

An observation of J-P.~Serre implies that the generic monic cubic polynomial, unique among generic monic polynomials of degree at least two, has a root that is a power series in the discriminant; Serre asked for a formula. We give formulas that work over any field with an absolute value and in every characteristic. Over a complete non-archimedean field we identify the root intrinsically: it is the isolated root, the one farthest from the others. We also answer the next case of Serre's question, computing explicitly the distinguished ramified quadratic factor of the generic monic quartic. The methods combine Hensel's lemma, identities for generalized binomial series, and elementary non-archimedean analysis.

A parity obstruction to completeness of object cotorsion pairs

Fu, Guil Asensio, Herzog and Torrecillas asked whether a complete ideal cotorsion pair of object ideals in an exact category always induces a complete cotorsion pair of objects. We show that it need not, even in a Hom-finite, weakly idempotent complete Frobenius exact category. Our example consists of bounded complexes of finite-dimensional vector spaces with even total cohomology dimension. We characterize special object approximations by parity and identify the obstruction as a non-split idempotent in the stable category. For cohereditary pairs, a criterion of Saor\'ın and Šťov\'ıček gives an affirmative answer when the stable category is idempotent complete.

The Finite Basis Problem for Multiplicatively Idempotent Semirings

The variety of semirings satisfying $x^2\approx x$ is hereditarily finitely based in the signature consisting of addition and multiplication, without designated constants. Multiplication may be noncommutative, and the semirings need not be finite. A subdirect decomposition reduces the proof to the subvarieties defined by $3x\approx x$ and $3x\approx2x$. In the latter case, we express each polynomial identity using a common doubled part and isolated word occurrences. Four fixed identities align the first- and last-occurrence words of these occurrences. Induction on their content extracts protected identities. The associated word identities define a band variety, to which the finite basis theorem for bands applies.
