Topological Quantum Gates on FCIs with Bounded Quantum Geometry

Abstract

Two-band 2D fractional Chern insulators (FCIs) have recently been shown, in principle, to admit unusual anyonic order, associated with Bloch Hopfions localized in momentum space. Here we show that bounding the integrated quantum metric along one primitive Brillouin-zone cycle may refine this topological order to $|C|$ distinct braiding observables, cyclically permuted by lattice translations, for Chern numbers $|C| > 1$. The cyclic structure entails mildly non-abelian braiding phases and otherwise matches the spectral flow exhibited by the FCI's hybrid Wannier states, with the metric bound equivalently a bound on the states' real-space spread. We give a classification of quantum gates in principle implementable on this topological order; among them we find the non-Clifford T-gate and the non-Clifford entangling CCZ-gate. This points to novel pathways to fault-tolerant quantum processes within the known orbital structure of FCIs, potentially informing experimental searches towards hardware for future topological quantum computers.

The Quantum Channels of the Compton Scattering of an Entangled Pair of Photons

The Compton scattering of an entangled pair of photons is studied. Using the resulting reduced density matrix, we demonstrate how to derive the Kraus operators for the interaction from the underlying fundamental theory, quantum electrodynamics. The normalization of the final density matrix of the entangled photons after the interaction is crucial to obtaining the correct probabilities and correlations. The reduced density matrix of the photon, which does not participate in the interaction directly, remains unchanged. It indicates that quantum effects in quantum sensing using an entangled photon pair can be observed only through the correlations or superposition of the entire pair. We relate our results to the Stokes parameters for determining polarizations and investigating the entangled states of photons from electron-positron annihilation in astrophysical systems.

Optimal phase estimation in the presence of correlated dephasing

We investigate optimal metrological protocols for phase estimation in the presence of correlated dephasing noise, including spin-squeezed state sensing strategies as well as parallel and adaptive protocols optimized using tensor-network-based numerical methods. The results are benchmarked against fundamental bounds obtained either via the latest quantum comb extension method or an optimized classical simulation method. We find that the spin-squeezed states offer practically optimal performance in the regime where phase fluctuations are positively correlated but can be outperformed by tensor-network-optimized strategies for negatively correlated fluctuations.

Microscopic study of topological phase transitions: Percolation point of view

We investigate microscopic mechanisms underlying decoherence-induced transitions between topologically ordered states. As a first case study, we analyze the color code using topological entanglement negativity (TEN) and a disorder parameter associated with 1-form symmetry. We interpret these quantities as first- and zeroth-dimensional simplicial homological objects, respectively, and show that the transition can be understood in terms of decoherence percolation. To resolve its local structure, we introduce quasi-local TEN (QLTEN), which visualizes the spatial distribution of local topological properties and the growth of decohered regions. We further introduce explosive percolation (EP), corresponding here to biased decoherence that suppresses the formation of large decohered clusters. As a second case study, we consider the toric code on a triangular lattice under external-field-type decoherence. Numerical results show that QLTEN faithfully captures the emergence of Higgs regions and the survival of logical qubits. Although global TEN, QLTEN clusters, and string operators are strongly correlated in both models, the color code and toric code respond differently to EP patterns. This difference indicates that a universal microscopic description of decoherence-induced topological phase transitions remains challenging even for closely related systems.
