Superstability of micrometer viscous jets surrounded by weakly-elastic viscous shells

Abstract

Our experiments demonstrate the strong stabilizing effect of a viscoelastic shell on flow-focused viscous jets. The results suggest that stabilization occurs when the polymer viscosity, $η_p$, exceeds a critical threshold, provided the extensional relaxation time, $λ$, is large enough to allow the polymer molecules to undergo the coil-stretch transition. Under these conditions, substantial extensional viscoelastic stresses develop as the liquid accelerates. Since both $η_p$ and $λ$ increase with shell viscosity, the polymer concentration required to stabilize the viscous jet decreases accordingly. Remarkably, moderately to highly viscous jets can be stabilized with very small polymer concentrations, for which no beads-on-a-string (BOAS) instability is observed.

Thermoresponsive self-oscillating hydrogel: spatially lumped model, relaxation dynamics and mechanical output

Thermoresponsive gels with a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) can undergo self-oscillation driven by a thermal flux through repeated cycles of positive feedback, driven by heating-induced collapse, and negative feedback, characterized by deformation recovery due to collapse-induced suppression of heating and heat dissipation to the environment. In order to explore the detailed bifurcation structure of a thermosensitive self-oscillating gel and understand its mechanical output of peristaltic motion and net displacement, we develop a minimal spatially lumped two-variable phenomenological model whose equilibrium parameters are constrained by poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) swelling data. A supercritical Hopf bifurcation creates stable small-amplitude oscillations near a fold of the swollen manifold, and canard-mediated growth transforms this branch into relaxation oscillations. Singular analysis relates the amplitude to fast jumps and the period to drift along slow manifolds, while continuation separates the Hopf boundary from the maximal-canard locus. For the representative maximum-power relaxation cycle considered here, the loaded model predicts greater work than a harmonic volume trajectory with the same stroke, period, and viscous load, with output concentrated in the fast collapse and re-swelling transitions. The net displacement during peristaltic locomotion of the thermoresponsive self-oscillating gel results from the work difference between collapse and re-swelling. These results provide a theoretical basis for designing autonomous thermoresponsive self-oscillating gel actuators whose oscillatory waveform and power output can be controlled through thermal feedback and mechanical loading.

Spatiotemporally correlated activity regulation of random-organizing hyperuniform states

Center-of-mass (COM) conservation has been widely accepted as an important mechanism for generating nonequilibrium dynamic hyperuniform states with vanishing long-wavelength density fluctuations, but whether it is sufficient for hyperuniformity remains unclear. Here, using particle simulations and a linear fluctuating theory, we show that spatiotemporally correlated activity regulation can destroy hyperuniformity while preserving COM conservation. We construct a binary mixture in which the local density of independently evolving driver particles regulates the activity of regulated particles following COM-conserving biased random organization. This counterexample demonstrates that hyperuniformity depends on the spatial and temporal correlations of activity as well as the conservation laws governing particle displacements. Our findings clarify the limits of COM conservation as a route to hyperuniformity and highlight the importance of controlling activity correlations in the design of nonequilibrium multihyperuniform mixtures.

Dense granular rheology from fluctuations

A governing equation for the granular temperature of flows past the jamming point is proposed and validated term-by-term with discrete element simulation. We measure and construct models for transport coefficients that do not diverge near the jamming fraction. As a limiting case of our equation, we derive the granular fluidity equation and find disagreement between the preexisting parametrizations of nonlocal granular fluidity, extended kinetic theory, and our discrete element simulations that is resolved by our continuum model.
