Curvature distributions and the Steiner formula for characteristic surfaces in the Heisenberg group

Abstract

We establish a new Steiner-type formula for smooth surfaces in the sub-Riemannian Heisenberg group. The main novelty is that we admit characteristic points, whose presence produces nontrivial singularities both of the distance from the surface and of its tubular neighborhood. Such singularities are reflected in the Steiner formula: the expansion up to a given order $N\geq 4$ of the volume of the $\varepsilon$-tubular neighborhood $\mathcal T_S(\varepsilon)$ of a surface $S$ is no longer polynomial, in general, taking the form \[ \mathrm{vol}(\mathcal T_S(\varepsilon)) = \sum_{j=1}^3α_j\varepsilon^j+\sum_{n=4}^N \left(α_n+β_n\log\varepsilon\right)\varepsilon^n+o(\varepsilon^N),\qquad\text{as }\varepsilon\to0^+ . \] More precisely, under a geometric stability condition on characteristic points, we prove that the first three coefficients are integrals over $S$ of locally integrable curvature densities, coinciding with those known in the non-characteristic case. A new phenomenon appears at order $4$, equal to the homogeneous dimension of the Heisenberg group, where logarithmic terms may occur. We show that the higher-order coefficients are naturally described by a distributional analogue of Federer's curvature measures, whose logarithmic components are supported on the characteristic set. We compute the fourth-order coefficients explicitly. The proof is based on different ingredients of independent interest: (i) an explicit formula for the cut time of homogeneous surfaces, (ii) a fine analysis of the normal exponential map through blow-ups, (iii) the study of the stability of the surface cut locus under perturbations.

Spectral and Schrödinger estimates restricted to submanifolds

Let $M$ be a complete Riemannian manifold with nonpositive sectional curvature and smooth bounded geometry. We prove logarithmic spectral projection estimates restricted to uniformly embedded submanifolds. On surfaces with pinched negative curvature, we also prove frequency-independent $L^2\to L^3$ Schrödinger restriction estimates on compact geodesic segments for times $cλ^{-1}\logλ$. If such a surface is even asymptotically hyperbolic, the $L^2\to L^q$ spectral estimates on complete nontrapped geodesics, for $q>2$, gain the square root of the window width. The high-frequency Schrödinger estimate holds for all times on these surfaces, both on compact segments and on complete nontrapped geodesics. Under a regularity assumption at the spectral threshold, the all-time estimate holds on the absolutely continuous spectral subspace.

Properties of Holomorphic $p$-Contact Manifolds

We continue the study of compact holomorphic $p$-contact manifolds $X$ that we introduced recently by expanding the discussion to include non-Kähler hyperbolicity issues and a differential calculus based on what we call the Lie derivative with respect to a $(0,\,q)$-form with values in the holomorphic tangent bundle of $X$. We also propose the notion of $p$-contact deformations for which we prove a Bogomolov-Tian-Todorov-type unobstructedness theorem to order two. This kind of small deformations of the complex structure is related to the essential horizontal deformations that we introduced in our previous work and forms part of a wider on-going project aimed at developing a non-Kähler mirror symmetry theory that was first tested on the Iwasawa manifold and subsequently on Calabi-Yau page-$1$-$\partial\bar\partial$-manifolds.
